He developed spasmodic dysphonia (involuntary larynx contractions) in 1996 at age 42.
It was caused by eating tainted hippopotamus meat. He had hit the hippo while driving a mack truck near Pablo Escobar's compound in the middle of the night, pursued by paramilitary forces. He returned 2 days later under cover of darkness to eat its liver and testicles, which an alternative health guru told him contained antioxidants and hormones that could prevent aging. He wound up about a week later in an El Salvadoran prison after rampaging through various towns in Colombia, Panama, and El Salvador causing property damage to several farmers' vegetable stalls, soiling himself repeatedly, and accosting locals. Eye witnesses report that he had the voice at the time of these incidents. The US had him extradited soon after agreeing that they'd try him, but they dropped the charges on administrative grounds almost immediately.
That's probably not true - no one really knows why spasmodic dysphonia happens. Seems to be something to do with your Basal Ganglia.
But not one that relates to the thing that we're trying to stop them from doing. Cashiers aren't paid per item scanned, they don't get commission. They are paid an hourly wage.
If you wanted to pay customers a rebate for their labor at the market rate for a cashier, or one set by the state, that'd make sense to eliminate the gains the company receives from automation.
So 5 minutes of work at $15/hr = $1.25. So not much, but it mitigates the benefit of not hiring people.
Though, it's still a benefit because you pay a person whether they're actively working or not and you have to pay tax on human labor (contributing to social security, etc) so maybe hiking it higher than whatever the typical wage is for cashiers would make sense.
We've given up so much as consumers. There was a time when people would be pissed that the store was making them do unpaid labor. Now we don't bat an eye.
Cost of labor, overhead, and profit are already accounted for in that $150 price of the goods. That's why the store charges $150 for them - because that's what covers the wages, overhead, and includes the maximum markup they can get away with (~3% margin for grocery stores afaik).
All I'm saying is, they do have to be able to cover costs. So because of that and their thin margins, they'd just hike prices (probably more than they'd need to take advantage of the situation).
So it makes more sense to either tax them for avoiding using human labor and passing that labor on to customers (to help pay for the drain they're placing on the economy by not hiring people), or just ban the practice outright. Couple that with price controls to ensure they can't unfairly inflate prices. Things they can't avoid rather than a fee they can hike prices to avoid.
It also doesn't really make sense to do it as a percentage. A cashier's wage is typically hourly, and the labor market has settled on a particular wage for cashiers in this area - say $15/hr.
If I have a $150 grocery bill, a 10% discount would be $15. For maybe 5 minutes of work. Working out to an hourly wage of $180/hr (60/5 = 12, 12 * 15 = 180).
So if they're saying "we should be compensating customers for being made to do labor", they'd be compensating them at roughly 12x the going rate for cashiers in this example.
Now if it's just meant to be punitive, OK. But then why not actually address the real issue: displacement of workers by technology and passing the labor burden on to unpaid consumers - either make that illegal or tax the company to help mitigate the harm it's causing by eliminating jobs.
It isn't about the external world though. You could live in an utopia, experience grief and loss, and be unable to feel happy or do the things you want to do for your whole life because of it.
Regardless of the condition of the world, you would suffer. Suffering is an internal, mental state.
I think it is best to try to reduce that suffering as an end in itself. But you could also think about it in terms of helping the suffering person achieve whatever it is that they want. No matter what it is they want to do, letting go of their attachment to their suffering will be beneficial. That includes changing the material conditions that caused the event in the first place. It is easier to do that if you aren't suffering.
Also, that is not to say they just "forget" and move on. It is simply that their relationship to the event that caused the suffering has changed. You can accept that the event occurred and that you suffered, but not allow it to cause you further suffering. That's easier said than done, but it is possible if someone wants to attempt it.
Exactly. Whether or not you feel justified in your anger and grief, it is maladaptive to hold onto them if it is preventing you from living your life. You can move past awful things, but you have to actually recognize the issue and want to change.
They're just idiots. The Hellenic world was massive. There were all sorts of different people in it or involved with it. Just look at all the Alexandrias - they're all over the place. The Greeks made it all the way to India and some even converted to Buddhism (e.g. King Menander I). Greek views on sexuality were very different to the heteronormative ideas RETVRN types would like to think. And they were SUPER into trade, sex, conversation & philosophizing, and general schmoozing with people of all colors creeds and persuasions. And the concept of a white race hadn't been invented yet.
Black Greeks. "Gay" Greeks (messy, they may not have thought quite like this, but still). Buddhist Greeks. Middle Eastern Greeks. Zoroastrian Greeks. Indian Greeks. Hindu Greeks. Interracial Greek Couples (they didn't really have the concept of "race" yet though). All totally normal.
The ancient world was much more complex and interesting than these 🤡 would like to think.
Yeah, like I said I'm not certain. And I have since seen random people circulating this on various social media, but I noticed it myself first. At 15%, it could just be water loss, but also it could be something more than that. Mainly it's just an annoyance.
Also, at least in my area, I believe there is a mislabeling scam going on. At least twice now I have bought boneless skinless chicken thighs from 2 different grocery stores (different chains) and the weight has been like ~15% lower than advertized.
Like a package of chicken thighs labeled at 3.11lbs (1.4kg) actually weighed roughly 2.67lbs (1.2kg), 14% less. One labeled at 2.49lbs (1.13kg) actually weighed roughly 2.1lbs (0.95kg), 16% less.
Some of that may be accounted for by the absorbant pad sucking out some of that excess liquid they pump in, but it shouldn't be so radically different
It's a joke, but that shit was serious. Imagine a squad of heavily armed men showing up and demanding to sleep in your house, eat your food, and potentially steal your things and sexually assault you or your family members. And if you refuse or resist, they will still do all of those things but assault or kill you.
That's how this worked in Europe for much of history and for America.
They can also curl their bodies up, which makes complete sense, but when I caught one as a kid I was NOT expecting them to be able to do that as I'd only ever seen them straightened out. I think it tried to bite, but I freaked out and immediately let go.

Frozen m&ms are great. I guess I mostly mean like nice dark chocolate, mainly
This anti-homeless architecture has really gotten out of hand

Disagree on chocolate. Texture and taste are improved at room temp.

Edit: Thanks for the gold, kind stranger!
That is an extremely reddit interaction.

I am a Nigerian prince. I just found $0.75T in the couch: do you want it?

Ah yes... Western civilization. As pioneered by the famously heterosexual ancient Greeks.
Yeah, extradition will never happen because of this. But in any just world it would.
