I'd be much more inclined to agree if we saw the impact of that revelation. The way it ends it feels to me more like they kind of get away with it and River and Simon get off just to hide things.

Sounds like we need to fight for a second season to clear some things up
Besides, it's not like the population would find out their leadership was behind something unthinkably horrific and then allow that government to remain in power.
