"Just spend 30 minutes organizing your room. Whats the big deal?"

Thirty minutes is a long time to experience pure and total mental anguish.

And if you’re like a lot of people with ADHD, that room’s in such a state that even a neurotypical can’t organize it in 30 minutes. I used to get so overwhelmed that I’d get paralyzed and end up crying. It doesn’t help that my parents didn’t teach me HOW to organize and clean - they just expected me to somehow know already. Then whatever effort I made was never enough, so I eventually figured, “What’s the point?”

Holy shit i have finally done it. It wasn't even that bad, once i started. If i keep it organised, i don't have to do it again or it will be easier.

And then the cycle continues. I did that shit for 3/4 of my life, and i'm so happy i found a system that works for me, but damn, one slip up, and i'm back where i started

I'm happy for you! And its OK if you slip again. Progress is never a straight line.

I can't for the love of me do a construction/renovation project with someone else. It gives me an intense headache an hour in. I can work on something on my own just fine though.

So true. It’s a mental weight or barrier that creates physiological responses. The thought of having to do whatever task creates almost a feeling of revulsion or claustrophobia, being trapped. I’m self aware enough to see it coming, but that doesn’t mean I can get past it. The job or task may not get done until it’s urgent, and if it’s never urgent…who knows? <—- and that’s what makes ADHD a problem vs “hurr durr nobody likes doing boring stuff so everyone’s adhd…”

I mean, boredom can be physically painful, too. Not just stuff that's overwhelming.

And then I reach a tipping point and become "too bored", and then I'm fucked for the rest of the day because I'm too wiped out to even do something I enjoy. So the boredom just keeps piling up, and I just sit there feeling awful. 😬 DAE?

I'm so exhausted that I have no life.

FatVegan@leminal.space · 1 pts · 195d

I have a "real" girlfriend for the first time in 20 years, and for the first time someone that i really love and i really want to spend time with. And it's crazy to me. I spend most of my free time and weekends with her, and i keep thinking: wow that's what it's like to not be exhausted and stressed all the time?

During my apprenticeship I had to file copies of sent bills. Once sorted by number and once sorted by client an number. I was slow, made lot of errors and I had headaches every time I had to do this, two times a week. I got problems because of that, nearly lost the job. And the worst part: they didn't let me do the interesting tasks until I'm able to do the "easy" things right...

Nobody thought that maybe it's ADHD. Got diagnosed 25 years later...

Hear hear. Half my job is helping people and doing creative stuff, which I love. The other half is the most boring drudgery of paperwork I've ever had in my life. I've literally procrastinated all week on paperwork that is due today in less than 8 hours. Fml.

Yes, yes, yes. Oh my god, so many yes. This perfectly describes yesterday for me, for example.

irotsoma@piefed.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 194d

Yep. I worked im a factory for a couple of years. The repetition for 12hrs/day caused extreme anxiety. It's not just "boredom".
