Morgan McSweeney quits as PM's chief of staffpublished at 14:20 14:20Breaking

We've just learnt that Keir Starmer's chief of staff Morgan McSweeney has resigned.

"After careful reflection, I have decided to resign from the government. The decision to appoint Peter Mandelson was wrong. He has damaged our party, our country and trust in politics itself," he says in a statement.

This story is developing. We'll bring you more in just a moment.

Starmer said he had 'full confidence' in McSweeney a couple of days back. That phrase always used to be the knell of doom. Nice to see that some things remain constant in the current political world.

This is big. This guy is pretty much the shadow PM who has been pulling the strings ever since Corbyn got ousted as leader. Incredibly shady character. Starmer will be next because their fates are linked.

Would be nice if we also got rid of the idea of these brilliant Machiavellian advisers.

I think it's good that he's gone, but I need to know starmer got rid of him. Not that he offered his resignation, but was asked for it.

Starmer's judgement on who his advisors are is the key aspect to this.

Edit: just seen this part of his statement:

Secondly, while I did not oversee the due diligence and vetting process....

So, who did?
