There's so much mis/dis-information around this stuff I think it's worth being precise. Otherwise you get people arguing with each other where neither side is correct and it's strawmen all round.

I get it. We've all been taught vaccines are all variations on a theme, but I think most have taken the wrong bit. As you say, the theme is training the immune system on something. It's not where that something comes from.

There's people who are scared of vaccines because "they're rewriting our DNA". It's crap, but it's because someone heard about mRNA. They've misunderstood and become alarmed. That then starts spreading. Telling people "You've misunderstood this new amazing tech" lands a lot better than "That's not even how vaccines work" and then explaining something that isn't the COVID vaccine.

While, yes, there's survivorship bias in such statements I think the stats also showed the chances of contracting a second infection was also lower than a vaccinated person contracting a first infection.

That's not really surprising. A vaccinated person's immune system has just seen a single protein, whereas a COVID survivor's immune system has been trained on the whole virus. I would expect it to perform better.

That's the idea behind Edward Jenner's smallpox vaccine, but only a few modern vaccines give live pathogens, or even neutralised pathogens as vaccines.

The COVID RNA vaccines (e.g. Pfizer/Moderna) contained messenger RNA that gave instructions to your body to construct proteins found on the surface of the COVID virus (specifically the spike proteins). Your immune system would then train itself on them.

You're not getting a small dose of virus, or even any parts of the virus, dead or alive. You're getting instructions on how to make a substance that the virus also contains. It's very impressive tech, but I do worry that it could be given blanket approval post-covid. The RNA instructions are just a delivery mechanism. What matters, from a safety point of view, is what the instructions tell the body to make.

The 2008 bailout happened because it was the banking sector that was exposed. If the consumer banks fail, everybody's accounts go up in flames.

Part of getting that bailout was that the banks had to restructure to insulate commercial banking from investment banking. Supposedly the investment arm can now get taken out, and the damage to the commercial arm is limited. I'll believe that when I see it. The big question at the moment is "how exposed are the banks?".

Oracle, Nvidia, Microsoft, OpenAI, Anthropic are all massively exposed. Nvidia and Microsoft might be big enough for a decimated version of themselves to come out the other side. Everyone else is going to the wall. No need to bail them out though. That's a contained explosion.

If the bank are making loans of hundreds of billions thinking they're sure fire money makers, but actually they're piles of shit, then it's 2008 again. That's when we see if they really protected the commercial arms of their banks.

Andy Burnham is expected to unveil on Thursday an £8.4bn investment for the UK's next generation of nuclear submarines.

Aimed at preparing Dreadnought-class boats for service by the 2030s, the nuclear-armed vessels are set to replace the current Vanguard-class and will be equipped to launch Trident 2 D5 ballistic missiles

This is on top of £16B since the 2020 defence spending report, and £30-40B before that (Wikipedia is a bit fuzzy on some of it). This is sunk-cost spending (no pun intended). There's no other option except cancel the program.

...and none of it covers the missiles, which isn't an independent system.

We need to have much better government procurement oversight. Contract values need to be understood properly upfront. Bids are intentionally low, with companies knowing that once they're "in" costs can go up and they'll get paid. It's a well understood strategy, but it continually happens.

The problem with slop code is not superficial.

The game the machine is playing is " reproduce text that looks like all the other text you've seen before". As such the code will look good, read well, etc. The problem is that the problems are hidden. Incongruent logic between parts of the same program. Subtle "unintentional" behaviour. Bug fixes which force an outcome rather than remove a fundamental issue.

Apart from excessive verbosity it can be hard to see the issues.

You know how if you put black bars over someone in a bikini or speedos, and suddenly they look naked? You haven't seen the person naked, but you've got a good idea what they look like naked because your brain filled in the gap. It's exactly what the diffusion model is doing.

I'm not sure it's realistic to stop the models doing it entirely given how they work. If you want it to fill in the background when you cut your ex out of a photo, it's going to fill in any other gaps.
