It'd be nice to have a page (eg status.feddit.uk) where I could put messages about what's happening. I'll need to look to see if something like that exists.

Not really, instance defederation is still a manual process through Lemmy's API. It's useful for sharing info about instances and I have used it to defed from some instances (mostly CSAM). The main thing you need be guaranteed for is so you can be on lemmy-federate.com. Irrc, Piefed also NIH'ed their own 'trusted instance' thing.
Though this again raises the question of our status w.r.t to Lemmy.world being our sole Guarantor.
I don't think you can have more than one Guarantor, it's a limit in Fediseer itself.

There's a setting in Lemmy that only let's logged in users make API requests. I'm going to activate that over night for now.

Seems to be a bug in Piefed's linkify code for punycode. It's transforming the the double hypen into an en dash.
It's relatively cheap (for Google), buys them a lot of good will and gets people contributing to the stack most of Google depends on.
