Yep, i'm in the second group - my parents should have divorced the moment his alcoholism was undeniable. Instead they dragged it out for 20 years, creating an increasingly hostile living environment for me and my siblings.
On the other hand, some divorced parents will use their kid against the other parent, so they can continue the abuse long after they divorce! And then those parents get to wonder why their kid never talks to them. Pro Tip for people lookong to avoid this situation: if a guy follows you home from the bar, and passes out on your porch, do not marry that person.
My friend is going through a messy divorce and I have to keep reminding him how I'm only now starting to realize how growing up with married parents who don't love each other affected me.
They're still together. I love my mom. I like my dad. I hate them together. Holidays are miserable.

You'll never understand how your parents' divorce saved your mental health until you meet someone whose parents should have divorced but didn't.

One of Fred's catch phrases is literally "Let's split up and look for clues"
His parents divorced.

They don't need to look for clues cause they already know the divorce is your fault
