They removed a lot of cruft and low quality code from Pleroma and in general it is developing at a nice and steady pace. In addition the developers are not right-wing nut jobs.
If your intent is to connect via app, I suppose you're better off with misskey or one of its forks like iceshrimp. They offer server specific custom reactions and allow crazy code on your posts. I recommend not using them on the web because the pages are HEAVY, like, "did my browser freeze or did it crash?" heavy
Wafrn could also work, it's more tumblr-like than twitter-like and gets you posts from mastodon/misskey and custom reactions

Akkoma was very slow in 2025, in terms of development.
Pleroma is much more rapidly updated.

I don't know, you're probably more likely to find Akkoma instances these days. It's pretty similar.
