U.S. military investigators believe it is likely that U.S. forces were responsible for an apparent strike on an Iranian girls' school that killed scores of children on Saturday but have not yet reached a final conclusion or completed their investigation, two U.S. officials told Reuters.
Reuters was unable to determine more details about the investigation, including what evidence contributed to the tentative assessment, what type of munition was used, who was responsible or why the U.S. might have struck the school.

many countries have schools close to or nearby or in military bases.
America for example: https://dodea.widen.net/s/hnzlgvtmvq/dodea-by-the-numbers
we knew this. all the technology that we have and we bombed them.
its a warcrime.

I feel the word "war crime" has lost any meaning after the last few years
FiniteBanjo@feddit.online · 1 pts · 178d
This particular article does not say that. It says it hasn't been able to rule it out. Which honestly doesn't make a lot of sense, you would think we know who flew where and dropped what at a specific time and place.

Israel says where to bomb and USA immediately fires. That's how they seem to operate.

I'd be willing to believe AI picked the target and no one is bothering to double check the targets it picks.
But I'm also willing to believe this was an intentional act of terrorism meant to demoralize the Iranian people.
Could go either way.
couldhavebeenyou@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 178d
If that was the case and this school is the only 'hallucination', they must have extremely good AI
More likely GI Schmoe put a dot on the wrong building
queermunist@lemmy.ml · 8 pts · 178d
No, they double tapped the school. Killed the children, then waited for first responders to show up to kill them too. It's either something cooked up by an AI or by a psychopath, there's not a lot of room for this to be an honest mistake.
Also, there's this story.
couldhavebeenyou@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 178d
If they misidentified the building... Why wouldn't they double tap it?
queermunist@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 178d
The first responders being civilian instead of military is a pretty strong clue. Also a bunch of parents and neighbors showed up, which wouldn't make any sense if it was a military target.
couldhavebeenyou@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 178d
Wait, do you think they are watching a live feed of every single building during such a thing?
Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 178d
A wall had been built between the military complex and the area that had the school and clinic. It's too bad the military didn't do any kind of investigation into their target BEFORE they bombed it.
Unless Israel gave them bad intel

It could be a US mistake, or an Israeli intentional, or honestly I wouldn't put it past Iran doing it themselves because it certainly is helping them with US Allies refusing to aid the US with the Israeli Invasion.

Iran has bombed like every country around itself, yes they were US military bases and the like, but do you really think it would suddenly attack its own girl school to get help from those countries? Israel has a track record of targeting schools and hospitals, so it's their MO, but it seems like this may have been a US airstrike. Again, not the first time US does something like that in middle east. Jim Carey got famous for his drawing of a school bus being bombed by US. And there were also weddings targeted with US bombs.

Several European Allies have been asked and refused to provide support including logistics support to the Trump admin, UNESCO is calling for investigations, if Iranian leadership planned this then their plan has worked very well for them. As you said, Iran has a track record of disregarding human life, a few weeks ago it was all over the news that they were massacring civilians protesting the famine.
Or it could be Israeli malice or an American fuckup, or maybe even Trump signing off on it himself, but I'm not gonna say anything is certain.

The refusal is not because of the "bombing a school" specifically, it's about the "starting a war to cover pedophiles" thing

A shame for the GOP. I'm sure they regret the loss of potential child trafficking victims.

Regardless of who did it, it is a disgusting war crime.
normalentrance@lemmy.zip · 7 pts · 178d
Seems logical that it could have been intentional. The US/Trump wants an all out war in order to cancel elections and seize more power.
He does a little oopsie and kills a bunch of innocent children; they get pissed off, attack the US directly, and then he has a war that both populations want. Kind of like 9/11, but we are the terrorists this time.
I think if there are boots on the ground, then all bets are off and that scenario might play out -- but who knows?
KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 178d
I’m fairly certain that war can’t stop elections in the US, from a constitutional standpoint.
normalentrance@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 178d
I agree. But also he said this a while back:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvUBtdHw3g4
He will try anything to either stop or rig the elections. The Democrats taking the house would be an effective end to his presidency/ reign of terror -- as long as they aren't all aipac shills.

Can these US citizens be put on trial for murder or war crimes by chance?
humanspiral@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 178d
US has longstanding tradition of protecting themselves, and of course bibi, from such options. This evil, and head of state assassination, was entirely intentional in order to ensure Iranians were more united to fight longer, and no option for ceasefire would exist. The ever more desperate shifts from reality in Trump demands seems like worrisome dementia or Israel handling inconsiderate of US sustainability.

In the US - Yes, but only if the actions are deemed to not be official actions sanctioned by leadership.
In the Hague - Yes

That is my typical goto screnario for actual torture
Watch the movie "Johnny got his gun", the Metallica song "one" was based off it and it is a great and awful movie because it's like the torture to end all tortures
