It does not, and that was not the intent with what I said.
I'm saying piracy (in general, as a practice) is preservation, because torrents help preserve media since they inherently allow for more resilient, redundant, decentralized hosting that isn't reliant on a provider, like Myrient, which can just shut down.
What I'm not saying is that piracy and torrenting are the same thing, that torrents are only for piracy, or that this is piracy.

If libraries did not exist and you purposed them today, you would be labeled a pirate and likely used into oblivion by the 3 or 4 massive companies that "own" all media. It's not strange that there is an overlap in the tools needed to preserve media in a robust, distributed way, and the tools used to distribute movies, music, and books.

Question: is that not a strawman argument?
You present a hypothetical, one that has never occurred afaik, and argue that this illustrates the contradicting nature of the definition of libraries?
I hope I misunderstood, please elaborate.

Archive.org is the largest digital library, a very new concept, that I know of and they are constantly being sued.

Proposing to make a second ever library is quite different from proposing the first ever (hence never seen before) library, I imagine it would be different that is. I do not in fact know.

While I do plan on someday using AI to recreate games, I would still want the original games for it to reference. I am thinking of having stuff like 'Stars!' rebuilt from Windows 3.1 coding into GodotScript or C#. Once that is done, extensions can be considered, such as referring to ad copy for the never released Stars! Supernova.
Plus, some people just want to be purebred retros. While I personally don't get it, there is no reason why retro players shouldn't get to play the original versions.

Need an authoritative source to step in every 25 years or so. Like an actual archive that reseeds with no bit rot periodically and corrects and fixes errors. Or a self correcting system like seeding parity files too. Can parity files fix each other? Maybe) o

I am glad it was saved. I didn't hear about it before and I discovered things I never thought I would see and began downloading furiously the stuff I wanted (mostly MS-DOS material). I hate it when things like this get lost.

I have maybe 16TB of Myrient. Mostly US releases. Got it about a year ago. So so glad I did now. It was back when they still had FTP online too. Man things have changed.

im very curious about the logistics of this sort of operation. like is there a group of people that just dl like 4 tb each and then pack that as a torrent and all agree to seed one part? or like how does 385tb get handled you know?

I'm just sad its Torrents now. I personally avoid Torrents whenever "piracy" is involved, because everyone who connects to the same Torrent can see my IP.

Use a vpn, or better yet a seedbox, or hell even i2p. There's plenty of options. Torrenting is one of the highest forms of piracy, it keeps the media alive long after whatever the current best site is goes down.

The problem for me is not that it is exposed to "someone". I am okay with Myrient getting my IP. The problem with Torrent is, that anyone joining the session gets all IPs from everyone who is connected at the moment.

I just don't understand what you are protecting yourself from, in my opinion if anyone can create a list of all of the pirated content you downloaded, you've already lost all security. A VPN should always be used.
