was going to say it sad when you want borger and can't afford borger but your comment reminds me of the fast food payment plan things that show up as news articles every so often. sigh.
I don't understand the romanticism for childhood. Being a child sucks ass. Being an adult can be hard for sure but overall it's much better. Humans weren't meant to live with zero autonomy. Not even children.
But the best time of life is university. Low (but not no) responsibilities, lots of free time, lots of independence, enough people to find your true friends.
I don't find responsibility to be that bad compared to having zero control over my life. In fact some responsibilities can be quite rewarding. I like helping people who I care about.
Plus I still had responsibilities as a child it was just pointless bullshit instead of real stuff. So many hours wasted on homework...
But you only need control if your life sucks and you need to change it. So for anyone with a happy childhood, that is going to be a tiny or nonexistent factor.
I agree, we shouldn't be painting false pictures like this. The hard truth is that being an adult is objectively better, no matter what experiences you had during childhood or teenhood.
The thing is, romanticizing lack of rights is what truly is the problem here, this isn't focused on the age - but the lack of control. Its usually this aspect which is included in these "childhood romanticism" posts. Age relation is just the consequence for this lack of rights.
Ultimately, autonomy should exist for all people - no matter the age. This is particularly important for teenagers which seem to be constantly ignored within society. Failing to understand this is what will lead to another "Australia style" blanket ban.
i want burger. I don't want to go out the door and talk to strangers today. I can use burger app. I don't want strangers at my doorstep. No burger for me.
A stand up comic had a bit about this that I repeat on occasion. Anytime I want something childish I say Imma get me that childish thing cause I'm a fucking adult, with money!
I remember doing that exact thing as a child. Well, teenager, but that's still a child. I had a driver's license. I had money from my part time job and/or allowance. I had access to a vehicle.
If I wanted a burger, I could just go get one. I rarely did unless I was out during a mealtime, because I had good food at home and didn't want to spend money. But that's the same decision I make as an adult.
child
driver's license
Well, teenager, but that's still a child
Not to be pedantic, but make up your mind here. A child is physically unable to drive nor do anything that requires complex thought. A teenager is not a child, both by definition and by physical aspect. This is essentially ageism, by infantilizing teenagers, including your past self. Especially, since you're correlating adulthood to that particular time period later on.
you can't just leave your house with kids. they have to come along. cue, 30 minutes of wrangling and 15 minutes of putting them in the car.
then you get to the burger place and the kids bitch and moan that this isn't "mappy meels".
so you order your burger, and take off to get your kids a happy meal.
you finally return home two hours after you decided you wanted a burger. get the kids settled in. they open the box and it's not nuggies. so now the kids are crying, because they have hamburgers instead of chicken nuggets.
so you throw some nuggets in the microwave, and give them to the little shits.
it's now been 30-40 minutes since you got home, so almost three hours since your craving for a burger. you're feeling dizzy and irritable because you haven't ate since breakfast 12 hours ago.
you sit down with your bag burger and open it up. it's cold. the fries are all dry and limp. with much disappointment you open the wrapper to your burger. it's a fucking grilled chicken.
you pick up your meal, toss it into the garbage out of rage, and grab a box of ramen.
the ramen is salty because you're crying into the broth.

I mean, if you don't have money to buy a burger then you have more serious issues to deal with I guess.
Tja@programming.dev · 25 pts · 164d
Isn't it scary tho, that there's absolutely nobody preventing you from buying like a 1.000 bucks LEGO death star?
If you insist, you can buy it.
On credit, if you're broke (even scarier).

Hopefully, you'd prevent yourself from doing it! But if you have no impulse control...

Not every parent removes all autonomy from their child. Sorry that happened to you, sounds like it sucked.

It's not even necessarily about parents though. Schools are the worst offenders.

This sent me down the rabbit hole of checking on the status of various meme cats. The news is not good.
::: spoiler Prepare yourself... Cheezburger Cat died in 2021. Long Cat died in 2020. They both outlived Grumpy Cat who passed in 2019.
Technically, I had remembered that they were all no longer with us before looking them up, but the dates had escaped my memory.
But on a lighter note, it seems that Business Cat may still be with us. At least, I can't find any mention of him having passed. :::
