I feel there's a lot of complaining about "Videogame logic" but sometimes it just makes sense.

This is maintaining us into a racing contest instead of cooperation.

The only weapons in Racing Destruction Set worked backwards. You could drop mines or oil slicks. Which did not actually make good sense from a game design perspective.

If you were behind, all you could really do is drop a mine in a choke point and hope to get the one in front on the next lap (if there was one).

Not good game design.

Mario Kart doesn’t give you less-useful items in the front; they just typically become more defensive-oriented. And you can still use bananas and green shells in an offensive manner; it just requires more skill than a red shell.
