One of my only good managers was a former deep welder. He said the light and electrical current draws the attention of weird shit that will just come and watch you work.

I want to see videos now. Do you think current ones take video or is it too much of a security risk?

you know, I'm not sure of anything as deep as he was describing. here's a video from reddit 3 years ago of a fish investigating some construction workers

nvm it's just a video of a feesh. sorry for misleading you. here's a video of actual welders I stole from tiktok

I dunno, I kind of prefer Daft Punk's old masks

I see underwater and welding and Norway and can't help thinking of the Byford Dolphin. Scary shit.

fartographer@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 134d

I've read about that before, it was a horrible read. I don't know why I decided to read about it again. It was a horrible read, again.

False, it clearly says NYD (New York Diving) on their gear.

(/s)

To make sure this isn't entirely a shit comment it looks like their helmet has a flip down welding protection filter maybe? Also, is that yellow thing a dive knife?

I cannot imagine how hard I would shit my ocean if I was out swimming and one of these dudes rolled up on me out of the water, as I have submechanicaphobia and thelassiaphobia, this is such a terrible and good meeting point of the two fears, and is spine tingling-ly creepy in the best way.

Wat so this is Mamdani fixing all the metal in newyork-underwaters? /s

neidu3@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 135d (2 replies)

I'm sure it's New York Department

fartographer@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 134d (1 reply)

POV: You work for the New York Parking Authority. You could be out writing tickets, but it's your department's turn to fight the electricity at the bottom of the ocean.

For Big Brother, ofc.

For an instant, I thought that said "wedding" and I was super intrigued.

kunaltyagi@programming.dev · 3 pts · 134d

That also happened

Their helmets make me think of the power armor helmets from Fallout (specifically the T-40 series or whatever it was called), never looked into the lore regarding the power armor but I wonder if inspiration for the design might have been drawn from these

Deep sea welding is a hell of a job. You have to spend days or weeks slowly getting submerged so you acclimate to the pressures. Then the same thing back.

And if the work experience kid accidentally opens your bathysphere you get forced through a 1 inch gap at 500km/h.

True story, it happened.

At least he didn't feel anything... i hope

Welding, basket weaving, what's the difference? You're doing things with your hands, you're underwater, it's quiet, and people are paying you.

doindoing@piefed.europe.pub · 3 pts · 134d

The school is in fact not under water. That would be ridiculous.

Karmanopoly@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 135d

This is where they film the space walks

PartyAt15thAndSummit@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 134d

Cool helmets.
What's all that shit for, though?

kokesh@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 134d

Can they have a beard? Is it itchy?
