Heather got an unexpected assist from the tripper, hopefully she got the date she wanted in the end or a clear rejection and an excuse to make fun of her friend
If Heather is smooth enough (which you could argue either way based on the other party not realizing it's a date), this is her opportunity to pivot hard into it being a date. Say something mildly sappy and emphasize it really being a date, go for the kiss.
I was once hanging out with this woman in college and she said on the phone to her friend "I'm on a date" then she said "well it's technically not a date" after I looked at her. So I was like got it not a date.
To be honest, I would also do the same. If she didn't mean it, and you tried to advance, that would be embarrassing and ruin a good thing. Things like that should be said way more explicit by both parties
I mean, I think the fact that this 10+ year old meme (posted on Relationship Memes of a places) is fake, is common knowledge. At least say a joke as part of the takedown! Make your comment interesting! You've been given the gift of free will, and the ability to say anything, use it!

Thought this was some bad porn movie script or something at first, expecting him to fix the cable

"Thanks for not assuming" yet literally assumed they were on a date

Not assuming they are straight

So assuming they are gay instead?
It's still an assumption yet they are thanked for not assuming.

The issue is not him making any assumption.
The issue is thinking everyone is straight until stated otherwise.
