I highly recommend the book A Libertarian Walks into a Bear by Matthew Hongoltz-Hetling. It's a very entertaining account of this, a real page turner.

To add another voice, it is a fantastic book. Several stories of bear attacks and encounters during the "13 colonies" times.

Update: I read it, it's an amazing book that had me chuckling a lot. The author has a great writing style. Will recommend to others too
