With IMDB forces users to sign-in to see reviews, what legitimate alternatives are there? Particularly FOSS.

Neodb is part of the fediverse. The same family as lemmy, piefed, and mastodon etc.

If I may suggest a very active instance, eggplant is cool: https://eggplant.place/

Sign up with a fedi account was nice and smooth. I got a little nervous about this option when I marked a book "read":

But then I scrolled over and it's "Mentioned Only" ๐Ÿ˜„

Are reviews federated between servers? Some servers have no reviews and some are solely in Chinese. It seems there is no federation and no auto translate?

Otherwise the main instance seems to have a ton of reviews though if you donโ€™t read Chinese youโ€™re out of luck.

You can find the occasional decent review there, but it's mostly people trying to be funny.

Why not Rotten Tomatoes?

I find the imdb rating to be closer to reality for western media.

You guys use IMBD for reviews?

comrademiao@piefed.social · 2 pts · 89d (1 reply)

why wouldn't I's guys? it has reviews and tells me where I can watch it.

Zorque@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 89d

I suppose, I guess I just dont use general reviews submitted to a site to get an idea of what a movie or show is like. I just never thought of any as worthwhile (to affect my opinions at least). IMDB is just what this post is about.

No shade meant, at least after the fact! ๐Ÿ˜…

Meh, reading conflicting reviews can give a sense of a film
