I am currently learning about Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, in which cognitive fusion is one of the sources of human suffering (along with experiential avoidance). Basically they're saying words are what makes us suffer, and though we cannot get away from them, we have to stop taking them seriously, we need to defuse our cognitions.

Words and thoughts can definitely make suffering worse, but a some pain cannot be avoided
