Along with the dollar being the standard for a lot of international trade, the military assistance provided by the US is one of the biggest reasons for their international power. Like, without those what does the US have to offer the rest of the world that aren't just shitty tech companies that suffer from extreme enshitification.
That played out beautifully when Trump got a big no on the use of airspace, bases and assistance in the straight. There was no soft power to make anything move.
And the main reason that the US is able to provide that assistance is by having bases in forward positions. Without those, it's a lot harder to project military strength or bomb schools.
It'd make sense for the US if we reduced the military budget alongside this. But no, they keep pouring even more money into the MIC for less diplomatic results.
That's not what this is from my understanding. NATO countries are picking up the tab on the US defense industry, that's exactly what Trump wants. Now if they were doing this with their own home grown industries then that would be a totally different story.

This is a good thing for Europe, not so much for the US. Weird that the US is the one initializing this change.

Yeah, Trump and his sad gang of dipshits has lost the US 70-80% of it the historical soft power it has held globally.
All because the current regime is too stupid to understand the value of it

The problem with constantly lying to people to keep them voting for your party is eventually people that believe those lies might get into power.
