As someone who did defend Platner, I will not shy away from the fact I was wrong. Whether or not he has changed since he was a mercenary really is irrelevant at this point. Rapists, whether reformed or not (and I do not believe be is reformed given his statement), should not hold positions of power. Platner needs to drop out and take accountability.

IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world · -15 pts · 59d

if he changed. then he would have covered up his tattoo way before getting into politics.

there's zero excuse.

no, getting a cover up when called out by the public doesn't count, too late, it should have been by his own agency before national pressure.

IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world · -16 pts · 59d (2 replies)

sorry, but if at any point in his life he changed, he would have covered up/removed that tattoo. keeping it was a choice he made every day in his life.

that isn't reformed. and giving a Blackwater merc with a nazi tattoos a chance is some MAGA bullshit. but apparently, it's only bad when they have Nazis in their party.

Comrade_Spood@quokk.au · 35 pts · 59d (1 reply)

Arguing with someone admitting they were wrong, and doing it as a two part comment, is genuinely insane.

IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world · -6 pts · 59d

He is saying that he changed is opinion after the rape allegation.

I am saying that is still bullshit because he supported a Blackwater merc with nazi tattoos.

There is still a major difference, No, you don't get points for allowing nazis, but drawing the line at rape

Platner needs to drop out and take accountability.
As someone who did defend Platner, I will not shy away from the fact I was wrong.

Did we study the same praxis‽ Why aren't you vanguarding his dropout right now‽ All of Maine should be out and replacing ALL the rapist candidates with an intersecting class.

Why are you still here, TAKE ACCOUNTABILITY‽
You're wrong, no? Go reparate!

Comrade_Spood@quokk.au · 17 pts · 58d (8 replies)

This is a crazily aggressive response that makes a lot of arrogant assumptions, and all at someone who is admitting they were wrong about half-heartedly defending a politician. No wonder people never admit when they are wrong.

alapakala@quokk.au · -7 pts · 58d (4 replies)

half-heartedly defending a politician Comrade_Spood

Wait, what's the display name for then?

Comrade_Spood@quokk.au · 11 pts · 58d (3 replies)

I am an anarchist, and anti-electoralist. All I have ever done to defend him was say that it is possible he had changed, and that I didnt like when people cherry picked quotes without also showing his later statements on those quotes, and that I was pissed about all these people outside of Maine all of a sudden having something to say about Maine politics.

I do my part in my community. I do not need to add electoral politics to "reparate" onto that list.

alapakala@quokk.au · -6 pts · 58d (2 replies)

Ah. I had thought you were a 1) Mainer that 2) forgot the first thing about intersection 3) was to #landback to the Cree. The first thing as anarchist that we should be doing is anti-electoralizing populists in Maine and beyond. Maine doesn't need Senators, it needs a revolution. If Platner really cared for Maine, he should be landbacking and reperating the people he affected by both on his tours & his merc deaths. But since we both know this is about money, Dems&Reps won't assist. Maine’ Senate seat needs to come from the bottom. A homeless Cree would be poetically just.

My reaction is justified if you did study anarchist principles. I only apologize for assuming you had anything to do with this FPtP campaign. It’s fine to want intersect for unjust slander. But Platner isn't an anarchist whatsoever. I admit my assumptions were wrong.

Truce?

Comrade_Spood@quokk.au · 6 pts · 58d (1 reply)

It wouldnt be the Cree, it would be the Penobscot, Passamaquoddy, Maliseet, Mi'kmaq, Abenaki, and Wolastoqiyik (maybe some others that I am not aware of).

I do read theory, but it is likely different than yours. I do not believe that landback or any of the change that is needed here will come from a politician. Especially if the strategy is to find a politician that is working class, holds all the right views, and has any viable chance of winning. I don't see electoralism as a viable strategy, but when need be I feel the strategy is to find the most agreeable one and then apply external pressure (through direct action, protest, and advocacy) for the change we want. While Platner hadnt advocated for landback, he did advocate for queer rights (including trans), universal healthcare, divestment from Israel, and had the endorsement of the labor unions. That was as close to agreeable as I saw. Now I wasnt ever gonna campaign for him, and hell I didnt even think I was gonna vote for him, but I did see him as the most agreeable choice when the alternatives were Susan Collins and Janet Mills (who has a long history of blocking important legislature and being hostile to idigenous tribes). However with the rape allegations (his response to it being the cherry on top), it doesnt matter how agreeable I perceived him in the past. The only hope for an agreeable senate seat is if Platner drops out and Troy Jackson gets the seat. And frankly I do not have much hope for the electoral politics working out well here.

Instead I am going to hold course to direct action as the strategy I want to invest my effort into. If others want to put effort into other strategies, the 100% can. But I expect people to tolerate and respect where I am choosing to put my energy, just as I respect and tolerate where they put theirs (and not to assume I am just being an armchair politician).

This is all to say, thank you for apologizing and I appreciate you being amicable now. I apologize if this comes off blunt or like I am trying to get the last word in, that is not my intention. I just wish to explain myself so you have a better understanding where I am coming from with this, address any loose ends to the convo, and to just generally clear things up. And totally truce [pic related].

Also genuine question, are you from Maine?

EOypEA5b2GzsYVF.webp

alapakala@quokk.au · 2 pts · 58d

Cool. I am going to stick to reminding folks electoralism doesn't liberate and empower us proles. All the while reminding Mainers how much they actually need to reparate.

Liberals in this network just keep diving our collective efforts, and it's extremely venomous.
Empowerment grassroots. It doesn't populizes its demands.
I already saw populists already swinging for Jackson instead of demolishing deathcamps.

Until we are all free✊🏿!

IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world · -14 pts · 58d (2 replies)

Because you did not do shit.

You supported a nazi, knowing he was a nazi, because "People can change UWU". Not even because he changed, but because theoretically people can. And all you did what "I acknowledge I was wrong". And? are you in the streets protesting for his resignation? are you doing anything besides telling us you are cool with nazis as long as they don't engage in sexual violence towards white women?

No, you are just trying to get sympathy online with zero praxis.

I was a zionist growing up. I went to Israel when I was 18. I saw apartheid with my own eyes and have been trying to make reparations.

I participate in a local anti-war orgs help organize, protest as often as I can, I write antizionist articles and essays, I organize a local Jewish bund. Why? Because I have to, because I still feel guilty for the things I said when I was 18, because I wont stop feeling guilty until Palestine is free. If I was like you I would say, cool, glad I learned and don't have to do anything about it.

Where the fuck is your accountability?

As far as it sounds, you are a nazi supporter that happens to be against rape.

Admitting being wrong is just useless chatter unless your actions show it.

Comrade_Spood@quokk.au · 16 pts · 58d (1 reply)

I organize an activist and mutual aid group, so you can get off your high horse and stop accusing me of doing nothing. You saw one comment and assumed I am doing nothing. You saw through one window and think you can saw through my whole house.

And no, I wasnt defending him because I just think people can change. I thought he did change because of his apologies and beliefs. I felt the tattoo was not evidence enough against this because I could see scenarios where a former soldier, mercenary, and bluecollar worker from Maine would get a tattoo not knowing it was a nazi symbol.

Now leave me alone or I'm just gonna block you. I no longer have the patience for your bad faith scolding and demands for self-flagellation.

Edit: also thinking that someone making a couple comments on the internet giving the benefit of the doubt is somehow equivalent to nazi apologia or defending colonialism and genocide is, once again, crazy.

Edit 2: Also also, as someone pointed out, this person is a fucking victim blamer. So frankly they can eat shit. Crazy they think they got ground to stand on. https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/comment/26963454

IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world · -12 pts · 58d

He had a nazi tattoo.

You do not get to be so naïve, that is called wilful ignorance.

If he changed, he would have removed it out of his own volition. He knew it was a nazi tattoo, he liked it, and only got a coverup after national outrage. You chose to support a nazi because you chose to be ignorant.

There is absolutely no excuse, and you have to accept that you weren't tricked to support a nazi, you chose to support one.

He was a goddamn blackwater mercenary with a nazi tattoo. I have absolutely no idea who anyone can be so stupid as to support him. This is MAGA levels of stupidity.

Good, block me, I have no patience for nazi supporters and apologists.

Just one thing, many abusers are really good at hiding their bad parts and only showing them once a partner is more and more trapped. never being bad enough to leave, but always getting more and more power until the partner cannot easily leave.

That comment is a bit of victim blaming.

However this is not this case. he had nazi tattoos and was a mercenary, how can you go past the first two dates, or the first time sleeping with him without seeing those absolutely ginormous red flags without running away? Those aren't red flags, those are foghorns, only possibility is that she is either severely mentally challenged, or a nazi herself.

I do not blame her for getting raped. no should get raped regardless how stupid they are, I am blaming her for dating a nazi. And even if she wasn't raped, I would still blame her for dating a nazi.

I am not shaming her for being a woman, or a victim, I am shaming her for being a fucking nazi

IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world · -11 pts · 58d (2 replies)

it is, but I y'all decided rape is bad and didn't give a fuck about nazi mercenaries killing brown people for money.

People can, and should be allowed to change for the better. People often change their minds on things once they get more information and/or have time to sit with it. We should expect our politicians to do the same, and giving regular people that’ve made honest mistakes but are committed to changing for the better an honest shot is admirable.

It just so happens that in this particular case, way too many chances were given and no honest attempt to change was made.

IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world · -18 pts · 59d

That is 100% bullshit. and you know why?

If at any point in his life, he regretted his Nazi tattoo, then most tattoo places offer cover up of Nazi tattoos for free. He was a mercenary, he could afford laser treatment. There is absolutely zero justification for him going into politics with said tattoo. And in interviews he reminisced about being a mercenary.

People can change. but he didn't. And using 'people can change' regarding people with nazi tattoos is some gaslighting bullshit.

Yes, the guy was a proven nazi.

Yes, the woman has made many bad life choices.

Yes, the progressist white knights are a bunch of hypocrites putting the woman's life above the poor innocent brown people the guy had killed.

Yes, in numbers genocide is worse than one life's traumatic experience.

But, no, man. It's fucking disingenuous putting both in the balance against each other.

That r*** triggers a lot more than one person because it is a symbol of patriarchal oppression.

Antagonizing the (liberal) feminists in this matter alienates people we should be trying to gain for our cause.

The timing a rape survivor chooses to go public, or to seek charges could be due to a million reasons. Maybe they have been in a mental health crisis, and couldn't cope with it previously. Or maybe, as she claims, she felt like the stakes were simply too high to stay silent now he was getting into federal politics. Or maybe some bad actor paid her enough to make it worth going public. We might never know for sure. Maybe it was a mix of all three. Maybe she (understandably) just wanted maximum retribution.

But what we do know for sure is that, whatever the reason for the timing, the guy was, and is, a sack of shit who should never have been stood up as a candidate in the first place.

Maybe he didn't know when he got it, but there is no fucking way he didn't figure it out before he run and people pointed it.

And he had his whole life to get a free coverup (most tattoo parlours will do cover up of hate symbols for free) , or get it removed. Keeping it was a choice he made.

So toten Kampf represent 6-25k German troops. I was curious how obscure of a Nazi symbol it is.

I have a tattoo of my own design on my back and no one ask what it means (I might tell them it's how life has origins in geochemistry), so I can believe that no one told him. I only know of that symbol because of platner.

Platner did cover up the tattoo and apologized for it ... Which makes his response to rape allegations like an admission to rape to me

Deme@sopuli.xyz · 15 pts · 59d

No. Aside from being in the insignia of that particular unit, the totenkopf was in much wider use in the SS, including as their universal cap badge. The SS totenkopf is a common nazi symbol.

I'm so looking forward to never hearing this bullshit talking point ever again. I swear, you guys have to be bots, there's absolutely no way a human being could look at the tattoo and the symbol side-by-side and have any doubt about it whatsoever.

Here is the tattoo:

See how every detail matches exactly perfectly? So obviously you're lying, and you probably know you're lying. Why?

solidheron@sh.itjust.works · -3 pts · 57d (5 replies)

Yeah did research that tattoo existed and was used before members of the Nazis party used it. So that means that that tattoo can have meaning outside of a Nazi context, the Christian cross isn't just Catholic (if that makes sense).

Again platner covered it up

You can call it Nazi tattoo. It really doesn't matter to me mostly because I'm not in Maine

Objection@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 57d (4 replies)

The same is true of the fucking swastika.

Irrelevant. "I doubt that it actually is a Nazi tattoo." You set the goalposts there. You could have left it at, "He probably didn't know what it was and covered it up when he found out," but you had to take it further and try to deny that it was ever a Nazi tattoo in the first place, which is obviously and objectively a lie.

You can call it Nazi tattoo. It really doesn’t matter to me mostly because I’m not in Maine

Which further begs the question of why you would lie about this if you're not even invested. Do you often lie on behalf of people with Nazi tattoos?

It’s actually relevant because platner shows that he can and does Change and that platner is willing to fix the mistakes he’s made.

Jesus Christ, do y'all have an actual script you all read from? Every. Single. Time. "It's not a Nazi symbol" transforms into "Yes, it's a Nazi symbol, but that's actually fine because blah blah blah."

Stop moving the goalposts. You said you doubted that it was a Nazi symbol at all. Now, you're acting like it's a given that it's a Nazi symbol but that it doesn't matter. So then, why did you lie? Why did you try to deny an obvious fact if that fact doesn't matter?

This is, of course, ignoring the fact that your talking points are out of date. Platner raped someone and lied about it. So no, he did not "prove he's capable of change." The only thing that was proven is either how gullible you are, or how willing you are to excuse red flags and horrible behavior from politicians the moment they say, "I'm sorry."

Good chunk of Lemmy users want people to wallow in shame over sins. Like we are never get over the fact that we might have returned a video back to block buster.

I fucking hate this liberal bullshit so much. "Returning a video to Blockbuster?" We're talking about a rapist killer-for-hire with a Nazi tattoo. It's absolutely disgusting for you to minimize that with that comparison, and if you're trying to present yourself as even remotely progressive while saying shit like that, it's doubly disgusting.

Newsflash, dipshit! He just dropped out of the race because it came out that he's a rapist! This whole mentality that you're describing was just clearly and unambiguously proven wrong. And I'm not trying to rub your face in it, because anybody can make a mistake, but if you're still trying to double down and defend this rapist Nazi mercenary, then I'm sorry, but you clearly need your face rubbed into your mistake.

  6. european colonization in the americas. most specifically the petrostate is the war against the land that indigenous americans talk about. the surface mines around me, owned by china, poison our water, and the rare earth mines, owned by denmark, poison our air.

let me ask you this: what did your comment accomplish, other than painting me with the broad brush you use to paint all americans? am i who you thought i was, or are you blinded to me because you assume i am something i am not?

Quill7513@slrpnk.net · 2 pts · 58d (1 reply)

Then are you American, or the colonized

Ultimately, like many Americans, I belong to both groups. "American" and "Chinese" work a little bit differently as monikers due to structural differences in both imperial projects. The Chinese imperial project is ancient and its cultural impact is more broadly understood by the people who live within the boundaries of the current People's Republic of China (though per my understanding this exact nature of this cultural impact is felt and understood a little less directly by the people with privilege within the system such as the Jianghuai and the Shandong). Meanwhile "American" is a little more wibbly wobbly in its nature. There are times that "American" means "A profiteer of Americanism" and others that it means "An advocate of Pan-Americanism" which are both directly opposed ideologies, one being nationalistic in nature and the other being diasporadic in nature. So the only truly unifying "American" trait that is held across both left and right side of the aisle about what "American" even means is someone in the American continents whose ethnic and cultural background is so blended and so remixed that at any given moment they may not have any deeply rooted grounding in what the cultural origins of something they're doing is. From this perspective I am having an American experience, and am thereby American.

However I also belong to a culture of people, the Appalachians, whose cultural heritage is rooted a little bit more deeply than most, and is currently undergoing a process of elimination by the dominant culture of America, Americanism, which is rooted much more directly in western Anglo-European ideals, norms, and standards. The roots of our culture are traceable back about 600 years when the Cherokee people, pushed from their native homelands in the Piedmont by Spanish, French, and English settlers, re-perpetrated the violence they were experiencing against the Osage who had lived in the Appalachian mountain range for ~6000 years. Even then, the Cherokee encountered escaped enslaved Africans (marooners) from the peninsula of Florida who spoke a pidgin language based on a mixture of Bantu, Appalachee (more on them later), and Spanish. From the very start, our culture's roots are the preservation of cultures who were being actively eliminated by neighbors and invading forces from abroad seeking to enrich themselves through extraction economies. As the centuries have gone on, other diasporas have entered the mix of this region, notably Germans who found them persecuted in the coastal tidewaters of the early USA following the American War of Independence, eastern Europeans (then called ::: spoiler course language Pollocks ::: in census data, but were often of various Eastern European ethnicities, including Ukrainian, Jewish, and Romani), Irish, and Jewish (here counted separately due to different diasporadic pressures than the initial population who arrived from Poland because persecution experienced by the Russian Empire in the 1770s was VERY different from the same empire in the 1880s) (more on this, and me personally, later). These cultures mixed together, brought their own tales of escaping genocide, and created something within the American Empire that isn't quite like anything else anywhere on earth, though at the same time, very analogous to other hill cultures throughout the world such as Gorani, Kurds, Gorals, Jumma, Khmer Loeu, Laotians, Merina, Montagnard, northeast Subcontinental Indian tribes, Pahari, Pamiris, Pogorzans, Rusyns, and Vlachs. The American Empire doesn't see value in this culture though. What it sees is the value of the Bituminous Coal, Anthracite, Uranium, and rare earth minerals that sit beneath our feet. From this perspective, I am colonized.

I disassociate from their label, esp. because they are colonists

I, too, dislike the term "American" because I much prefer to identify myself as Appalachian. However, I am also aware that I do not get to opt out of the culture I was born into. I have traveled all across this so called nation, and I have seen the many things that unite us and did participate in the monoculture that has been defined for us through mass media before I was old enough to understand that was what was being done to me. I watch baseball because I enjoy it. I'll probably watch the next superbowl so I can catch the halftime show and discuss what messages my coworkers are missing in the iconography the performer put on screen the next day. These are things I am not necessarily proud of in myself, but things I find value in when organizing my neighbors because I'm not a scold telling them they're wrong to like these things, but instead providing new directions for their frustrations that their cities aren't safe because of Flock cameras and ICE agents. These are American things, and to deny this about myself would be delusional and counterproductive both when having discussions about the future of Appalachia and the possibility of a Post-American society.

At the same time, I am also aware of the harm of the homogenization of the American monoculture. I have participated in Appalachian dance and music since I was 5. This is something I continue to do. I play the bass, and I flatfoot. These are things that are important for me to do because they're things that remind me that it is possible to have your own culture, to be a member of a community, and even to have shared cultural experiences that cross imaginary boundaries on maps with other people without those shared experiences being universal. I have become increasingly interested of late in the value of these things as counterprogramming within and without Appalachia as a form of counterprogramming to the American monoculture. The three musical genres that I think we do differently from anywhere else in the country, and that we have opportunities to share out into the world as an expression of an alternative future to Americanism and the American monoculture are Bluegrass, Egg Punk, and Dungeon Synth. I'm sure there are others, but these just seem to me to be the things we're doing a little bit differently from anyone else that other people outside our region have the most interest in. We can attach messaging about what harms us to these genres of music that helps us to resist our demise, and to build international solidarity. Here's examples of all three from here:

What have they decided to called the land they are reclaiming?

The Cherokee called North America "Turtle Island" long before European settlers arrived on it. However, they have no name for a Pan-Turtle-Islander experience, especially because this leaves out South America as they have no name for that continent. So they call the people of these two continents "American" when they are referring to Pan-Americanism and citizens of the United States having an American experience American when they are referring to Americanism.

Glad to find a comrade here who isn’t a dengist

Fuck every hierarchy

Reflect if you’re truly American, or Cherokee

I am ABSOLUTELY not Cherokee. To call myself as such would be deeply disrespectful to my neighbors and the specific experiences they have within the American Empire. As a tangential metaphor, I am white. The specific kind of white I am is a mixture of Irish, Ukrainian, and Jewish. If I started calling myself Cherokee that would be like if I suddenly started calling myself Armenian. I am not of that culture, I do not have roots into that culture, none of my stories, songs, or recipes come from that culture. It would be cultural appropriation, and an example of white privilege. I exist with that privilege and do not get to opt out of it. It happens before an interaction even begins because it can be seen in the color of my skin when a police officer pulls me over (or even simply opts not to because of that privilege). Similarly, I do not get to opt out of some of the intrinsic benefits of being American I have received, such as an early life spent traveling Canada without a passport because a president negotiated a trade agreement that allowed me to do so by the coincidence of me being born in a building where doctors used to torture Cherokee children. So even if I don't like that I'm American or the American Empire, that doesn't change the fact that I am American and have received intrinsic benefits from this. The fact that I dislike these things means that I must work to ensure reparations are paid, and that when they are made, the land that must be returned is returned still as in tact as is possible from what is left of it. I can drive 1 hour from my house and find a mountain that is completely gone now. We can never return that mountain to its people, nor the cairns that represented ancestors who were alive as recently the 1970s, nor the paper birch that represented ancestors who were alive as recently as the 1990s. But we can maybe save the next mountain if we act in solidarity with each other to bring about a permanent end to all surface mining.

isn’t quite like anything else anywhere on earth, though at the same time,

During the Roman Empire, we would be labeled as “peons.” “Slaves” even. But both these terms were also Authoritarian labels we choose to forgo. We decided then “companion, ally, friend” were better terms to label our struggle against oppressors. The same is true now. Many internationally see «American» as «Nazi», for good reason. Most of us wish that empire to die. So diasporadic colonized victims of American imperialism should label themselves anti colonist. «Luddites» was that term, so was «Redneck». I hope you see why many of us do not want to be associated with the genocides of «America».

The Cherokee called North America “Turtle Island” long before European settlers arrived on it. By the continued bipartisan populist global genocides, both Dems&Reps have admitted to support what Zionists are committing. If the so called diasporadic Pan-Americans had held these populists accountable, we wouldn't be headed in this mass extinction event. I am, like @Sineljora@sh.itjust.works, blaming it on the populists that empower them. They label themselves as Americans, desiring the continued American “dream.” The unrepentant Afghan war. The subjugation of Tawantinsuyu, the demand to render Kalaallit Nunaat theirs, etc. etc.. We justifiably despise the term “American” because all they do is terrorize, abroad, and now domestically. The chickens have come to roost.
