I don't know why some commentators at the time felt bad for him or thought he was hard done by. He blatantly cheated, and in one of the most embarrassing ways possible, and was caught and punished. Who watches football and likes diving and simulation, or thinks it should go unpunished? It's one of the worst parts of the sport.
Also, I don't get this "cOnSiStEnCy" argument people make that if we can't find and punish every single instance of diving and simulation then it should just be open season for them. Some cheaters getting caught and punished is always better than none.

Their entire argument is, "we don't like that the law on the books applied to us." It was objectively the correct decision based on the laws on the books. It was also subjectively correct, because nobody wants that shit in the game. Any argument against it boils down to not liking something that hurts you.
Embolo was a fucking moron for trying to cheat in the middle of the field. Best case scenario is Switzerland keeps possession in the middle of the field (not a dangerous free kick location) and the defender gets a yellow. Worst case is you lose the fucking game. It's one thing to do this in the box or in a dangerous free kick location where you have a legit shot to get a goal out of it. Hell, the only reason he got the yellow was because VAR was able to review the defender's yellow. If he hadn't sold it so much, the defender might have only gotten a common foul and it wouldn't have been reviewable.
