Reminds me of one of my favorite passages written by Kurt Vonnegut.
John Brown wears a hangman’s noose for a necktie up in Heaven. I
asked him about it, and he said, ‘Where’s yours? Where’s yours?’
His eyes were like glowing coins. ‘Without shedding of blood,’ he said,
‘there is no remission of sin.’
I think the provocation of the "Where’s yours? Where’s yours?" really reflects the writings of John Brown. He always seemed so desperately confused as to how everyone else seemed to be able to turn a blind eye to such a great sin happening in front of them.
I've DMed a few DnD campaigns where the party basically turned into a party of John Browns (as in each PC became a slightly different version of John Brown) and each time it made me beam with joy.
