If only this guy was a member of the US government, he could have done something

To be fair, the vice president has no power, unless Iran follows through in their promise...

Then why the hell do we keep hearing from him every 2 minutes. I would be so happy never to see his face again

NotEasyBeingGreen@slrpnk.net · 9 pts · 33d

I think because Trump is old and sick and could die any second so Republicans want someone recognizable ready to take charge of the cruelty and grift when he dies.

phutatorius@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 32d

If he was wearing a tie, I'd tell him to loosen it.

neukenindekeuken@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 33d

Dick Cheyney changed that forever. Vice presidents very much do have power. He ran the presidency for the most part, and gave VPs real power, rather than symbolic value.

phutatorius@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 32d

He has the power to start the 25th amendment process. And don't forget the tiebreaker vote in the Senate.

If this war results in the divorce between the US and Israel, that'll be the second greatest thing to come out of it, the first thing being the decarbonization speedup

aquovie@lemmy.cafe · 16 pts · 34d (10 replies)

There are a lot of dubious "gains", almost all pyrrhic and smelling vaguely of social darwinism.

I'm looking forward to US customary units finally dying off because no one is going to put up with fahrenheit-pounds per square toenail anymore.

In the coming Cold War, I wonder if Europe is ready to emulate the non-aligned movement of India? How long will it take the US to admit it has a failed economy(+) like the USSR?

(+) Not as stupid as "capitalism bad, commies good" - but we need capitalism with real antitrust action, consumer protection, pro-union laws, and a fully funded social safety net. The healthiest option is a muddy gray, not black and white.

Tango@piefed.ca · 16 pts · 34d (4 replies)

Not gonna lie: I have no idea what you're talking about.

aquovie@lemmy.cafe · 9 pts · 34d (2 replies)

It was admittedly 3 half-thoughts tied into one post.

When filling out a form, why is Taiwan a "region"? Because companies are catering to China. Why do we buy 3ft USB cables and not 1m USB cables? Because companies are catering to the US. But if the US makes itself irrelevant, those little courtesies are going to go away.

And the US is treating its relationship with China like a Cold War. Except our economy is severely crippled right now while China's is going absolutely crazy. Making the US contemporary analogue to the old USSR, while China plays the part of the post WW2 US. Young people look at it through an oversimplified lens of "capitalism vs communism". I think the truth is that either system can fuck itself and the real key to success is moderation.

Ghoelian@piefed.social · 5 pts · 33d

While I agree with what you said,

Why do we buy 3ft USB cables and not 1m USB cables?

I sure don't. The only products I ever see over here with US units are imported, everything else is metric.

A_norny_mousse@piefed.zip · 3 pts · 33d

When filling out a form, why is Taiwan a “region”? Because companies are catering to China.

taiwan is a country

This is not in the US. I have checked 2 global providers, they sidestep the problem by labeling the dropdown "Country or region".

Why do we buy 3ft USB cables and not 1m USB cables? Because companies are catering to the US.

Doesn't this suggest the opposite? 1m is more generic than 3ft. And I just measured my USB cables and most of them are exactly 1m or slightly more, and not 91cm.

I do agree with most of your points though, but I think you should take a deep breath every now and then and think what your point actually is and whether it's coming across.

US customary units aren't going anywhere.

rbos@lemmy.ca · 7 pts · 34d

They certainly won't leave the USA anymore, if trade is significantly curtailed.

helvetpuli@sopuli.xyz · 3 pts · 33d (2 replies)

Exactly. They will stay in the USA from now on, and leave the rest of us have our metric units.

cattywampas@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 33d (1 reply)

We also use metric in the US. It's taught in every science class from high school if not middle school. All of our medicine and sciences are done in metric, as well as military and aerospace.

helvetpuli@sopuli.xyz · 2 pts · 33d

I'm well aware. I'm taking about the problem of having to convert when dealing with USA origin consumer products.

You get to pick and choose but your manufacturers force us to deal with your ancient Roman units. I mean, whose foot was it anyway?

Treating the latest burble of lies from the pedo con-artist coalition regime as a headline is lazy ragebait, not news

phutatorius@lemmy.zip · 29 pts · 34d (2 replies)

Vance has to navigate a tricky path between the MAGA faction that wants more genocide of Arabs and Muslims, and the antisemites.

There's also a good-faith position possible, opposing foreign interference in US politics, but I have serious doubts that Vance does anything based on honest motives. If it were foreign interference that's the real issue, he'd have said something about Russia too. Oh, but he can't do that, can he?

Rat_in_a_hat@lemmy.ca · 10 pts · 34d (1 reply)

He's playing both sides so he can always come out on top.

Especially since there's a growing Republican base that's against war and against funding going to Israel

phutatorius@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 32d

He’s playing both sides so he can always come out on top.

Yeah, I've seen him doing more of that lately, talking out both sides of his mouth. Trying to distance himself from the Trump shitsow without losing the bigot vote. He twists and turns more than a weasel.

USA bombed a school day 1 of the war and murdered 140 kids. Nothing happened, they don't care. War is a business for these people and they seek more of it. USA goverment is 100% fine with this war or they wouldn't have get involved.

Guessing Israel isnt funding a Vance presidential campaign

pjwestin@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 34d

This is what is really dangerous about the right-wing right now. The savvier fascists have figured out that support for Israel is a bipartisan loser, so they're staking an anti-Israel position, and some of them (Tucker Carlson, for example) are starting to integrate their antisemitic dog whistles into it.

The left-wing should counter with any anti-zionist, anti-colonial position that explicitly rejects antisemitism, but unfortunately, the defacto left-wing party is the Democrats, who have essentially staked out the same pro-Israel middle east policy as the neocons. Right now, Trump's support for Israel is keeping the right pro-Israel for now, but when he's gone (and his health makes that appear imminent), the right may outflank the Democrats on Israel, leaving us to choose between antisemitism and genocide. I would guess that's what Vance is doing here.
