While Ukraine has a huge domestic drone assembly industry, I'm sure a lot of the basic chips and radios are still coming from China. It's not hyperbole to say the war hinges on that supply continuing.
OTOH, Russia AA loves shooting down civilian airliners and they're going to be getting twitchy around airports now.
More than anything, it depends on the developer using it. In my experience, most are just slop shovelers that don't read or review what Claude does. Then it falls on the PR reviewer (me) to be an asshole: Did you review your own code? Do you understand what this part over here does? Why did you choose this method versus alternatives?
Unless you tell Claude/Opus otherwise, it's not going to take the initiative to refactor things, tidy up parts it didn't touch, or hell, it won't even spellcheck things. Can you really call it a language model if it outputs misspelled words? Its unit tests are great boilerplate but never comprehensive enough for me.
Claude is the developer that puts zero pride or effort in their work beyond the bare minimum to not get fired.
It was admittedly 3 half-thoughts tied into one post.
When filling out a form, why is Taiwan a "region"? Because companies are catering to China. Why do we buy 3ft USB cables and not 1m USB cables? Because companies are catering to the US. But if the US makes itself irrelevant, those little courtesies are going to go away.
And the US is treating its relationship with China like a Cold War. Except our economy is severely crippled right now while China's is going absolutely crazy. Making the US contemporary analogue to the old USSR, while China plays the part of the post WW2 US. Young people look at it through an oversimplified lens of "capitalism vs communism". I think the truth is that either system can fuck itself and the real key to success is moderation.
Maybe you do not care much about the future of the Republican Party. You should. Conservatives will always be with us. If conservatives become convinced that they can not win democratically, they will not abandon conservatism: they will reject democracy.
David Frum, 2018
This was so prescient, it's amazing. To be a Republican is to be a traitor.
There are a lot of dubious "gains", almost all pyrrhic and smelling vaguely of social darwinism.
I'm looking forward to US customary units finally dying off because no one is going to put up with fahrenheit-pounds per square toenail anymore.
In the coming Cold War, I wonder if Europe is ready to emulate the non-aligned movement of India? How long will it take the US to admit it has a failed economy(+) like the USSR?
(+) Not as stupid as "capitalism bad, commies good" - but we need capitalism with real antitrust action, consumer protection, pro-union laws, and a fully funded social safety net. The healthiest option is a muddy gray, not black and white.
MA. Tickets have "I'd like to pay" or "I'd like a hearing". No mention of guilt.
Hearings are civil, not criminal, and you represent yourself in front of a magistrate (baby judge). If you tried to represent yourself in a criminal case, the judge would give you a very hard time about that choice. Either way, you don't call witnesses, there's no cross examination, and no discovery.
I don't get where people are going full Law&Order, demanding to see their accuser.
The (Australian) law actually says you can't have your phone out (face up/down doesn't matter). And I think the law is consistent with other common sense traffic safety:
You can't have an open beer bottle within reach
You can't have a firearm within reach
Phone use has been shown to be equivalent (or in some cases, far worse) to driving over the BAC limit.
Very quickly skimming the law, it sounds like what's common in other countries: there will be a national language, restrictions on your native culture's practices, etc. Hijabs in France, for example, or mandatory English/French in Canada.
Of course, the text of the law and its application could be very different.
Despite Trump's disgusting EO, the US does not have an official national language. Find the right kind of cultural enclave and business is conducted in that language because language should exist to communicate and promote exchange. Gov-wise we just kinda do everything in English, mostly Spanish, French (up in the Northeast), and some growing flavor of Chinese because that's what gets the job done best for our community.
The next question: so why are they saying this? It seems to me that Iran values weakening the US more than they do a peace deal, even a lopsided $300B one. So Trump has a temper tantrum and goes back to bombing Iran. Through some twisted logic, that's good for Iran.
I'm darkly amused that the citizens of US, Israel, and Iran all share a lot in common. And chief among those is that our governments are run by power hungry assholes that justify their brutality with religion and DARVO.
Are you kidding? I'll take that over 40C summers any day. Get a coat for yourself and studded tires for your bike. Done and done.

Replace Medicaid with Medicare to scare the Boomers more.

You're arguing that, to buffer against a black swan event, businesses should be making significant extra profit.
I think you're creating a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation.
I'm guessing "this fall" means November 4th.

Or more concisely: the government should never contract out law enforcement to private companies.
Have you ever fought a traffic ticket? You’re not on trial. You’re not pleading guilty/not-guilty. It’s an administrative/civil thing.
To be fair, it's likely the midterms will actually be rigged this time.
Far more secure for the user. Which infringes upon the supreme inalienable rights of corporations.
I said that about tap-to-pay. Tapping with a card works. But my phone is right there...
