The wild fire smoke filled the plant I work at until Friday night. They did not offer any sort of face coverings. One of the guys found a stash of N95’s that the guys at the paint booth used, so we had at least something.
I went to the hardware store the next day and got some 3M Aura 9205+ N95 masks. I work 8-12 hours on the shop floor, and wanted to have at least something that might help. Bought a 20 pack, offered them to everyone in my department. A couple people took some, but no one wore them. I wanted to make sure that the team at least had the opportunity to wear PPE. The smoke in the plant was way worse than it was outside.
They looked at me as if I were some paranoid nut. My lungs felt fine all night. I took the mask off a couple of times to have some water, and it was crazy how bad it smelled in the plant. With the mask on, it was just another Thursday night.
Fuckin’ libtards though, right? Got ‘em! Whatev, I felt quite comfortable knowing I did at least something to protect myself.
I’m familiar with the concept of the shifting window, and how most Americans on the liberal side would be considered right wing in more progressive countries.
But in the common speech of America politics, this is the way we express it
As a society we used to motivate the ignorant fucks by singling them out and making sure they felt humiliated. At some point people felt we needed to coddle them with participation trophies and listening to their nonsensical beliefs about reality.
Social stigma can be a powerful force, certainly, but mainly when you are in community with someone. In today's fractured political landscape I don't believe insulting people online really achieves anything.
This is mainly a result of the disintegration of real-world social networks that used to hold people accountable. You aren't going to rebuild that by being a reply guy on Twitter.
One of the only things that changed minds (and behavior) is peer pressure. But as you said, it has to be peer pressure. Pressure from your in-group.
One of the big changes in our society is idiots and assholes can run off to Fox or 4chan or whatever slimy gutter appeals to them, and find their fellow idiots. Fellow idiots and people manipulating them for their own reasons.
It sucks that reasonable people need to spend all this effort to babysit large children, but if we don't then they go shit themselves and vote for trump.
If you, a ~40 yo person, spent the last 20 years managing to either learn nothing about climate change, or somehow get convinced it isn't a problem...
You are fundamentally too stupid to be trusted to make any decisions that have any impact on anyone other than yourself. You are an invalid, you're useless for anything other than manual labor, bullshit jobs, and being some kind of a public facing clown.
It takes such a staggering combination of ignorance, privelege and arrogance to be in that position, that you can be extremely confident that attempting to 'rehabilitate' such a person is a lost cause, a waste of time.
Yeah, you're not gonna fix anything being snarky on Twitter.
Also, you're not gonna fix anything, period.
Its too late. We are fucked. It is not possible to stop or really even meaningfully mitigate what is coming now, basically unless you are China, maybe.
Maybe, maybe you can make yourself a bit more resistant to the coming disasters, maybe you can relocate to comparitively less fucked areas.
So I think its totally fine to clown on a greedy selfish dipshit who has done her part to doom billions of humans to unneccessary avoidable suffering, and early, painful deaths... and thats to say nothing of the rest of the ecosphere.
I literally do not care to try to change the mind of such a rube. You shouldn't either, if you value your own lifespan going further than the next 10 years.
The high road leads nowhere against these kinds of willfully ignorant fucks. But have fun being needlessly polite to Nazi sympathizers and the dangerously stupid.
There is an ocean of difference between incidental ignorance to be gently corrected, and paid, institutional ignorance driven by cult mentality and intentional shoving of one's head in the sand.
Handing these people gently and with a respect they frankly don't deserve is EXACTLY what got us here.
