This had me going down the rabbit hole of the other compression algorithm that has had my interest for a long time: Arithmetic coding.

It looks like all the patents on that have expired... sooo, original bzip resurrection when?

No, this applies to the old mp4 codecs like xvid/divx. Mpeg4 AVC is still patented in some jurisdictions.

haven't used xvid in like 20 years. do still have some old 'archives' though.
