Lesbians like me joined forces with conservatives. Now they're turning on us.

https://www.queermajority.com/essays-all/lesbians-like-me-joined-forces-with-conservatives

When the “woke” mania swept the country in 2020, I took a step back and reevaluated where I stood and why I stood there. To my surprise, I found that I agreed with conservatives and libertarians on a number of issues. I opposed childhood gender transitions, unlawful and divisive DEI mandates, and the excesses of Critical Race Theory. I argued against biological males competing in women’s sports and being housed in women’s prisons. I did so loudly and publicly, losing many friends along the way. My stance wasn’t rooted in hate or fear but in a commitment to reason and fairness. My loyalty was to the truth, not to political tribes. Maintaining my integrity cost me greatly, but I believed it was worth it.

Like we fucking told your terf ass they would from the beginning

I still oppose radical gender ideology and Critical Race Theory in schools. I still believe that biological males shouldn’t compete in women’s sports or be housed in women’s prisons. But I will not stand by while LGBT rights are legislated away.

Still a conservative, just slightly more aware of the leopard on her face.

Oh Reid Newton is a conservative. From the last paragraph:

Trump won in 2024 in part due to the left’s overreach. If the right continues down this path, they could meet a similar fate in future elections. As more people come out as LGBT, and as more LGBT people voice concerns with far-left activist orthodoxies, Republicans should be broadening the tent, not excluding these people and pushing them away. Hemorrhaging potential voters to get your druthers isn’t a winning political strategy. The pendulum from hell will just keep swinging back and forth until we all decide we’ve had enough.

Reid Newton is failing to acknowledge that the entire conservative movement has always been rooted intolerance.

SnoopSqueak@lemmy.today · 13 pts · 41d

They're pretending the intolerance is reasonable:

My stance wasn’t rooted in hate or fear but in a commitment to reason and fairness.

I think they mean, "I'm scared of not winning when I deserve to win, and I hate people who try to take that from me."

From my point of view, it is reasonable to affirm one's gender, it is fair to let everybody play in a game if they follow the rules. But I don't care who wins, and apparently that is very important to some people.

Hey now, she may be gay but nobody said she couldn't be a fucking stupid conservative too.

runner_g@piefed.blahaj.zone · 6 pts · 40d

Good proud that selfish people come in every every gender identity and sexual orientation. Happy to take away your rights but how dare you touch my rights.

aramis87@fedia.io · 71 pts · 41d (3 replies)

Where's that cartoon, the one with the MAGAt thanking the gay guy for helping to round up the last of the trans people, and the gay guy says, "You're welcome! Who are we going after next?" And the MAGAt just stands there smiling at him.

Like, what did she expect was going to happen?! Oh, I see:

Many will say I should have seen this coming — that the right has and always will be against LGBT rights. And maybe there’s some truth to that. But that just wasn’t my experience.

Translation: repression isn't real unless it's happening to ME.

Translation: repression isn't real unless it's happening to ME.

That's a really good summary of conservatism.

blackbelt352@lemmy.world · 58 pts · 41d

This article is infuriating, she's still a conservative after everything she experienced, after realizing conservatives have no principles other than power, and that she was a disposable token to be spent when convenient. And her big conclusion is that conservatives overreaching is leading to their downfall, and not the lack of principles or abject hatred of anyone who isnt cis, het, white, and male.

Assassassin@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 53 pts · 41d (3 replies)

unlawful and divisive DEI mandates, and the excesses of Critical Race Theory.

The two subjects that immediately tell me everything I need to know about a person's politics. If those two things are an issue for you, you just listen to fox talking heads and have never tried to actually understand the issue.

VitoRobles@lemmy.today · 29 pts · 41d

This is where it gets me. What is Critical Race Theory?

You mean History?

unlawful and divisive DEI mandates

You mean like when they replaced hundreds of government jobs with mediocre white guys who don't even have a degree/experience? How they put the WIFE of a business owner in charge of the Department of Education?

Every supposed "DEI hire" has the education to back it up.

grue@lemmy.world · 21 pts · 41d (1 reply)

I figured that much out at "childhood gender transitions," before I even got to the part you quoted. She started the list off with a fictional boogeyman.

(Puberty blockers are literally the opposite of "childhood gender transitions" as the entire point is to stall for time until adulthood.)

fluffykittycat@slrpnk.net · 4 pts · 41d

Puberty blockers were the compromise, and the right shat all over it. There's no reason to play ball and not just let younger teens have HRT now

A TERF lesbian may think she has more in common with conservatives than with other queer folk. Conservatives will never think so.

I worked toward what I believed — and still believe — to be true. I still oppose radical gender ideology and Critical Race Theory in schools. I still believe that biological males shouldn’t compete in women’s sports or be housed in women’s prisons. But I will not stand by while LGBT rights are legislated away.

“I worked toward hurting others. But hurting me? That’s where I draw the line.”

There’s no such thing as “woke mania.” There’s being aware of the historic systemic racism, and the absurd backlash by the Right when that systemic racism & bigotry is called out.

Childhood gender transitions are very rare, very individualized, heavily monitored and regulated, and ultimately none of your business.

There are no “unlawful DEI mandates.” That’s just the Rights’ fear-mongering when it comes to fixing the systemic racism & bigotry mentioned before.

There is no “excess of critical race theory.” That’s just some elective education focused on understanding the systemic racism & bigotry mentioned before.

There are less than 0.01% of athletes who are transgender, and it is also none of your business. It has no effect on your life.

There are less than 0.001% of prisoners who are transgender, and it is also none of your business. It has no effect on your life.

Your stance is clearly rooted in hate and fear. There is no “reason or fairness” in what you are saying. Your loyalty is not to truth, it’s based on selfishness and cowardice. Parroting right-wing lies and fear tactics. There’s no integrity in your words.

Being a lesbian doesn’t mean you can’t also be a racist and/or bigot. It just also means you’re a hypocrite too.

hperrin@lemmy.ca · 9 pts · 40d

It’s disheartening that she still doesn’t realize that the transphobia and misogyny she partakes in are rooted in the same falsehoods currently being used to strip her of her rights.

But, there’s no such thing as an intelligent conservative.

deft@lemmy.wtf · 9 pts · 40d

TEEFs went conservative? Yeah no surprise. Stupid fucking TERFs hiding behind the label of their sexuality

Downvoted because no one needs to read this type of stupidity.

Agreed with both sides unfortunately.

Downvote - sure. Fuck this shit.

Upvote - sure. Every moron who even slightly considered this perspective should get their ass ripped into.

I can think of a hundred issues more pressing to the American public than the existence of same-sex marriage: inflation, the cost of healthcare, national security, the war in Gaza — the list goes on.

And yet:

When the “woke” mania swept the country in 2020, I took a step back and reevaluated where I stood and why I stood there. To my surprise, I found that I agreed with conservatives and libertarians on a number of issues. I opposed childhood gender transitions, unlawful and divisive DEI mandates, and the excesses of Critical Race Theory. hanrahan@slrpnk.net · 6 pts · 39d

like you're prepared to throw everyone and everything under the bus as long as trans girls can't play sports?

It's like you've run out of things to be angry about, not homelessness, shitty healthcare, beyond shitty transport policy, ludicrous war spending, dead kids from guns, the likely destruction of civilization from climate change, foreign policy that shits over all allies... all unimportant, trans kids playing basketball is the real issue to focus on ffs

As to DEI mandates being decisive, the GOP made them decisive to appeal to dimwits. Having 50% representation of women in Congress for example seems like an admirable goal because women are ~50% of the population.

so much winning
