I gave heard that was actually a compadent leader, and was strong willed enough to use a plantir to spy on sauron. But enduring the palentir, and the woresinging war was already straining him. The loss of his sons and forseeing Minas Tirith surrounded by the enemy pushed him to madness.
Denethor did get done a little dirty in the films, an off-hand "I have seen it" doesn't really get the whole 'the will of Sauron has twisted my planning and strategy into paranoia and madness' idea across and makes him seem like a bumbling chump instead of another embodiment of the corruption of good-intentioned men

It’s possible he was before he lost his son. Who knows how grief will hit you in such a stressful situation.
