They can’t just say “over 19 million eggs” instead of “nearly 1.6 million dozen eggs”?
Especially when the article photo shows a carton of six eggs instead of a dozen?
comador@lemmy.world · 25 pts · 26d
Saying it in dozens reduces the perceived impact I guess... They want less egg on their face it seems.
AbouBenAdhem@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 26d
And then showing a photo of a half-carton further reduces the perceived impact.
As well as being able to use the modifier “nearly” instead of “over”.

3.2 million half dozen
AbouBenAdhem@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 26d
About a myriad gross baker’s dozens
charokol@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 26d
Or it helps put the impact in perspective, as nobody buys individual eggs
SpacePanda@mander.xyz · 1 pts · 26d
But 18, 24, 30 and 60 packs are affected as well
Ludicrous0251@piefed.zip · 3 pts · 26d
Best I can do is 1.6 dozen million eggs.
SpacePanda@mander.xyz · 1 pts · 26d
Or 1.6 million egg 12 packs were recalled would make the most sense because wtf is 1.6 million dozen. The six pack in the picture definitely makes this more confusing.

The violent shitting will continue until morale improves.

It builds character.

When a company voluntarily takes its product from the shelf, you know it's a bad time. I would say it was maybe from a recommendation from the FDA, but they aren't what they used to be. So much winning.
daychilde@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 26d
This is a sign that the system is working, not a failure. It's a voluntary recall, meaning there is elevated risk - possible risk - but nobody's gotten sick. So this is to be safe and minimize the chances anyone does get sick.
This is how it's supposed to work.
Also, this is not that many eggs in the scope of things.
There are many many broken things in the US. This is not one of them.

So explosive diarrhea is not enough?
Loce@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 26d
The price of eggs will now surely go down
PM_ME_YOUR_ZOD_RUNES@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 26d
This may sound like a stupid question but don't all eggs have a Salmonella risk? That's the reason you're supposed to cook them no?
I get that they don't always get cooked, like I make homemade mayo with raw eggs all the time. But that's a chance I know I'm taking.
Why would these eggs need to be recalled instead of just saying "Make sure you cook these before consuming".
ohulancutash@feddit.uk · 8 pts · 26d
The risk is acceptably low for raw consumption in countries that vaccinate the chickens. Of course, being stuck in the 18th century, the US doesn’t do this.
cattywampas@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 26d
Yes, but it's a very small risk. You've got a greater chance of getting sick from raw flour or salad greens (even not considering the current cyclosporia outbreak) than you do from raw eggs.
PM_ME_YOUR_ZOD_RUNES@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 26d
Good to know that I don't need to worry about it too much. Thanks!
panda_abyss@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 26d
I’m not a doctor or a scientist, but if you add acid to your mayo like lemon juice or vinegar I think that mitigates the risk.
PM_ME_YOUR_ZOD_RUNES@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 26d
Yes of course, lemon juice and vinegar. I had a feeling it would but didn't think it was foolproof.
mechoman444@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 25d
So 19,074,924 eggs have been recalled.
1.6 million dozen doesn't even make sense. Why would they word it like that?
finallymadeanaccount@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 26d
RFK Jr: "What a waste! You need to eat eggs raw, shell and all, to build up a tolerance to salmonella, just like nature intended. In fact, eggs are best consumed when you suck 'em straight out of the chicken. Just go to some of the caged egg farms! The chickens are right there! Pick 'em up and schloop! Instant MAHA!"
PowerCrazy@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 25d
Texas produces ~557 Million Dozen eggs annually. So this represents .2% of all eggs produced in Texas. Not even news worthy tbh.
TigerAce@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 22d
1.6 million 12 eggs.
Americans: Even when they just have to say an amount they will try to make it complicated, otherwise others might think they might be metric sympathizers.
Why dozen though. Could have said 925 great gross. Or is it because Americans think eggs always come in a box of 12?
