Puerto Rico residents have endured more than two months without reliable running water, a crisis triggered by three major ruptures detected in the island’s 72-inch Superaqueduct pipeline on June 10, 2026, and compounded by decades of aging infrastructure and worsening drought conditions.

According to Puerto Rico’s water agency, more than 50 percent of the island’s drinking water supply has been lost over the past 19 years due to leaks, breaks, and spills in the aging system. In a 2019 report card, the American Society of Civil Engineers gave Puerto Rico’s drinking water infrastructure a D grade, estimating the territory needs $3.9 billion in improvements to modernize its public utilities...

San Juan’s mayor, Miguel Romero, sued Puerto Rico’s Aqueducts and Sewer Authority in late May over the outages, signaling growing official frustration with the utility’s response. The governor said repairs to the major pipeline crack were completed by mid-June, but residents remain skeptical. One San Juan resident reported that as repairs progressed, crews discovered additional leaks they said they could not fix without halting other repairs, suggesting the problem extends far beyond the initial rupture.
