It's the '20s, fascism is on the rise and the stock market is completely divorced from the economic reality of regular people

Also, we just had a major pandemic.

To be fair, the 1919 flu was orders of magnitude worse than covid. Literally one of the deadliest pandemics in human history. Covid is far lower in terms of percentage of mortality globally.

Probably so, but another thing is much more severe today than it ever was back then: the ease and speed of distributing fascist and/or destabilizing propaganda. X, Youtube, Instagram, Tiktok are full of it, and guess where most people hang out on and get their "news" from.

Covid wasnt rivaled by a global war or smth.

I'd be curious how much of a difference the vaccine made. Like if we hadn't had a vaccine would the death rates have been more similar?

One major difference I think I've read is that the Spanish flu was more likely to kill younger people whereas COVID hit our elderly population much harder.

History doesn't repeat itself, but it often rhymes.

Dont worry, if we all fight and die and sacrifice, our decendants will get to enjoy paying crippling rent to the worst of us.

EmpathicVagrant@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d

Only two generations are won at a time, and the fight is harder each cycle. It’s not something you relax about. We must teach those who walk after to always defend and protect the rights of the people and to always care for others.

Actually, I'm not personally a big fan of either one 🤷🏻

She's my cousin but doesn't she look exactly like an ongoing civilisational collapse?

marcos@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1d

Yeah, right... Equating the US empire with the civilization is all the rage nowadays.

The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.

Fulfilling the rule that all English sayings are either Shakespeare or the KJV.
