I hope I am too, but I just looked at what a CPU, motherboard and RAM upgrade would cost and it looks like this system will be old enough to start high school by the time I replace it.

And the system after that? If I buy new in 2030, when will the one after that be? 2045?

You can dig as deep as you care to, all the way down to source code. And if you can't read code, you can learn to. If you don't want to spend the time, that's completely reasonable. But it's your choice.

IIRC that "You wouldn't download a car!" piracy screen used it's music and font without a license.

It's selfishness, not any sort of consistent belief system. AI that undermines me is the worst thing ever, but I'll use AI that shits on other people without a second thought.

Maybe, if you were rich enough to have the green and blue plugs and not just yellow, white and red. Normal composite only had one plug for video, component had three plus the two for audio.

And also everyone was running garbage Windows XP applications which wanted administrator permissions and to save it's data in the Program Files folder.

For years the accounts software we used at work required you to install it in C:\ because it couldn't handle keeping it's data and executable in different places.

Yeah, I wouldn't trust the light to flash to decide whether or not it was important.

Get someone to plug in an OBDII reader and see what code set the light. Takes 5 minutes, a mechanic might do it for free.

IIRC the way federation works, a server sends a message and then waits for an acknowledgement before sending another one. So a 250ms round trip time to Australia means a hard limit of 4 messages per second no matter how fast the internet link is.

We had a lot of trouble with lemmy.world a while back because they were just plain generating more messages than they could send us so we were lagging further and further behind.

Lemmy can have multiple simultaneous connections between servers now to get around the latency throughput limit, but that might be something server admins need to configure.

There were problems with federation but I thought they got solved when it got multithreaded, unless your instance never enabled that.

On DOS you could also have fun by replacing prompt $p$g with prompt {whatever text you want instead of c:}

Maybe they shouldn't have labelled anything the government does which helps its people as socialism if they don't want the people to be pro-socialism.
