Can smells wake us up from deep sleep?

I've been awakened by the dog taking a massive shit more than once

I don't know about smoke, but I can tell you from personal experience that it's possible to be awakened from a deep sleep by a strong smell.

It can for some animals at least, I can drop a treat in front of my cat's nose and it'll wake him right up.
