Maybe house finch or purple finch? Both of those show up in Illinois.

I'm inclined to say male house finch. Finch beak shape, and the red on the upper chest and the brown streaks on the chest are there.

Looks a bit like a common Linnet, but without knowing where you saw it it is challening to be sure.
