I was just mentioning this the other day. I thought the law was already in effect, but turns out that starting in Feb 2027, ALL portable devices, including ereaders, have to have batteries that are easy to change.

From article:

Starting February 18, 2027, the EU will require all smartphones, e-readers, and tablets sold in Europe to feature user-replaceable batteries. Devices must be designed so that consumers can easily remove and replace batteries using basic, commercially available tools, without needing specialized technical skills or heat-based adhesive removal.

ALL portable devices

There are exceptions for small devices, I believe smart watches, perv glasses and wireless earbuds are exempt. Not sure about wireless headphones and speakers.

I hope they'll continue with other electronics on batteries, like toothbrushes and trimmers etc.

It'd be nice if the legislation still affected those small devices but just had a lower threshold of requirement

Thank you for providing extra context!

I wonder what Microsoft will do. The surface devices are absolute HELL to repair.

Good question. But I am happy to see that they will be spending a billion dollars to solve the problem! :)
