Emeralds

My first time painting on a canvas in over a decade, and my first time using painters tape to get crisper lines. I think it came out decently lol

I'm enjoying the symmetry and composition. I think it's come out nicely.

If you're doing more flat/geometric work and want even crisper taped lines, a few things which might help:

A heavily textured canvas is making things more difficult for this type of work - the paint can creep under the tape, in the little gaps between the threads. You have numerous options though.

  • Paint on board. It's already flat. You can get pre-gessoed board if you want/need.
  • You can knock the texture down on the canvas with a few more layers of gesso and some sanding.
  • When you mask something off, do a quick coat of the "underneath" colour first, slightly over the edges of the tape that you're masking against, which will seal the edge in. In theory, none of your "over" colour should be able to seep under the tape.

Anyway, looks good and you should carry on with it :)

I'll need to look into that. I've only ever used regular canvas (and never even heard of gesso). That idea of painting the base layer over the tape is genius! The best ideas are always the ones that make me wonder how I never thought of that lol

If you're looking at boards, then "cradled boards" or "cradled panels" have a frame behind them (basically the same as the back of the canvas), which makes it easier to apply fittings later, if you plan on putting them on a wall or anything. A flat board (i.e 6mm plywood) on its own would tend to need framing, as it's not deep enough to hold most screws.

For gesso, simplifying things a bit, it's pretty much a cross between a primer/undercoat and a filler. If you buy a pre-made canvas, it's normally been pre-gessoed/pre-primed. A cradled board is likely to be bare wood. If you want to avoid buying extra stuff, you can get away with a couple of thin coats of white acrylic paint as an undercoat and not worry about it too much :)

For pre-painting taping, I only realised that after years - I saw someone else do it and thought "oh yeah, that makes a lot of sense!".

I like the color choices. A tip for painting with painters tape, if you paint the base color first over the tape, after that dries, paint the contrasting color on top of that, Then remove the tape.

You will get crisper lines, because the bleed with happen with the base color on to the base color, not the contrasting one.

🤣🤣 love it! I just finished my Minecraft hyper focus about a month ago (now it's stardew) so I won't be playing it for at least a year before I'm obsessed again lmao.
