For the non-Americans in the audience: Dish salt isn't a thing here; it is basically unheard of in the United States for dishwashers to have built-in water softeners. Usually if hard water is a problem a whole house water softener is installed.
I've been using vinegar for 10 years. Works perfectly well. Don't know if it's the most optimised solution, but I get food grade vinegar in gallon bottles anyway and also use it for cleaning mirrors, glass tabletops and tile floor.
Edit: I haven't gotten a confirmation message, so maybe the bot is down? There are several other "remindme" bots to choose from, though, so at least one of them ought to work.
When I retired I took over the dishwashing duties in the house. Mostly just my wife and I, and occasional family gatherings and visits. The first thing I did was to get rid of the dishwashing machine which created a lot more space, and the next thing was to buy a small wall-mounted TV. Dishes is a pleasure now, or at least a bit of peace.

NO!
Long term it will harm your seals and hoses.
Rinse aid is cheap, a new dishwasher is expensive.

Exactly what big rinse aid would say!

Been doing it for years. It works in my experience.

Ah. It's about dishwashers and the reagent that reduces water's surface tension to disperse droplets which would cause spots when drying.
For a moment I thought I had discovered another curious american habit. Now I'm slightly disappointed. ;)

Also reduces hard water for better results

I do this from time to time. It really helps that I have seen.
Are you using regular food-grade vinegar?
Tregetour@lemdro.id · 4 pts · 11d
yes

My dishwasher recommends rinse aid or <2% citric acid solution. I will be testing that soon.

Have been using citric acid as both a dishwasher rinse aid, and a fabric softener in the laundry machine. Highly recommended.
CompactFlax@discuss.tchncs.de · 3 pts · 10d
The fabric softener is amazing for my hard water and retrospectively obvious.
captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 10d
I've used citric acid powder to clean the dishwasher. Basically dump some in and then run a cycle empty. I'm told this achieves something.

Also vinegar instead of fabric softener is way better for your clothes, allergies, the machine, the pipes, and the environment.

Plus you get to smell like fish and chips!
Madzielle@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 6 pts · 11d
the smell goes away when it dries.
I used to use vinegar in my potty training toddler's laundry always, worked really well to get nasty smells out.
Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 11d
Use citric acid, won’t damage your machine and works much better.

I would like to know the outcome.

I don't even bother with rinse aid. I don't like the residue that it was leaving on dishes. Curious to hear how your test goes.

How can i save this so i remember to check back in a month?
ryannathans@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 11d
Why a month
otterpop@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 11d
"I'm doing a one month test" kind of in the title my dude
grue@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 11d
@remindme@mstdn.social one month

Vinegar will damage most machines. Use citric acid instead. 2 tablespoons to 100ml of water.
