Mindless worker-bees. People who can't self-reflect. People who drown in money and their 23k is like your 0.01€. People with no intrinsic value whatsoever so they think a price-tag on a ring will impress their mate enough to say yes. Like a peacock, no pun intended.
Or people so blinded by media and ads that they just do "what everyone does". Or a combination of all those reasons and more...
Wifey and me drown in money but I still proposed with a ring out of aluminum foil because nothing else was there at the moment 😁
She still has it, many many many moons later.
We don't even have rings worth more than 10 moneyz.
I bought moisinite for mine, he proposed with a family heirloom ring that I'm too scared I'll lose, I'm keeping it safe to pass down to my kids. Moisinite is the second hardest gem after diamond, looks like a diamond and it's made synthetically, all of that adds up to cheap and pretty.
Men with disposable income and a wife brought up on the declining but very much prevailing idea of a traditional Western wedding. So, a good chunk of the Western population.
Some people think that's the way it has to be. My wife and I got a ring that we both love for about a tenth of what some of our friends and family paid. Not to mention the people that refuse to get lab grown diamonds because they want "the real thing"

Oh yes, heard of that. And on top of it: has no blood on it like diamonds...
Looks really cool, i wouldn't dare to wear that heirloom. Just at home maybe 😁

I have ADHD and I've lost so many rings, I'd get traumatized losing the family ring lol.

Yeah me too. And boy have I lost things in my life 😁 But those I treasure dearly, I keep safe at home. Safe from me 🤷🏻

they want “the real thing”
As if anyone would ever notice. Or care.

The blood of those children mining for diamonds soaks into the stone and gives it a magical quality.

If my partner spent $2,300 on a fucking rock i'd be pissed. Something inexpensive and sentimental would be way more romantic anyway.

just imagine if it was twenty thousand dollars more than that

Whoops, my bad. Don't know where I got that number from.

Your brain went a bit more logical though still expensive af. Would a 230$ ring make more sense?
daggermoon@piefed.world · 4 pts · 8d
So long as we could afford it that's not too bad. I think that money could be put to something better though.

I would much rather make a (probably ugly) ring with my own hands.
daggermoon@piefed.world · 1 pts · 7d
I'd eat out the woman who makes me an engagement ring.
icelimit@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 7d
Uh. I would too. But I was going to make it for my future woman. Which probably isn't you.

Is that fanaticism or just desperate greed to capitalize on something while doing very little to earn it? In either case, fuck trump.
