So my strategy is using https://noai.duckduckgo.com/ as search engine. I have installed the uBlacklist add on, this let's me block out websites completely on the internet with a single click in my search results. So whenever I search a topic and end up on one of those websites that are fully LLM-generated I hit that button.

I will only help very shorty until the whole internet is eaten up by LLMs, but it gives me a feeling of control.

haven’t used Google’s search engine for a long time, but a quick test seems that appending -ai to your search still returns results without the AI overview at the top of the page

the results are still loaded with trash and ads, though, and this won’t work if you’re searching via voice on your phone

If anything on any page bothers you this much, just install a custom CSS extension on pretty much any browser and remove the element

Unfortunately, the Google app ("hey Google" wake word) that is being used here, can't add/use extensions.

https://kagi.com/

it is paid. if you pay, you are a customer. if you get it "for free", you are the merchandise that is being sold and the merchandise is not really expected to complain.

I'm not casting aspersions on kagi, I've heard nothing but good things about them, but I don't agree with the idea that paying means you're not the merchandise. Once a company gets greedy enough, with few enough competitors, you'll be both the customer and the merchandise.

I'm getting as much use out of them as I can before they become terrible.

Once a company gets greedy enough

once a thing happens, you reevaluate and choose the best decision at that time, that is how life works. i am talking about today 🤷‍♂️

morto@piefed.social · 6 pts · 22d (2 replies)

Recent history shows that people are realy terrible at reavaluating their choices when companies go deep into enshitification.

wtf is this discussion?

  • hey, i have problem with shitty service x
  • you may want to try service y, because it is not shitty
  • but the service y may become shitty in the future and i will for some strange reason not be able to leave, here is my phony outrage!

Throughout all of human history we've had an incredible amount of inertia against change.

I've heard nothing but good things about them

Here's a negative then: AI summaries are on all tiers. That means you're paying/subsidizing them, even if you don't use them.

If they offered tiers without AI summaries (with a lower price due to the loss of a so-called "feature") then we can talk
