Government Petition: Ban foreign media ownership, enact a social media levy & new regulatory reform

https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/760061

Pass law to ban foreign & offshore ownership of UK media, enact a social-media levy to distribute media ownership across society & fund independent, local & cooperative-owned media. We believe democracy is failing as the media & political power are owned by a tiny rich elite.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5xEsn9pIdE - of the 409 petitions that reached 100k signatures (at time of video) only one (about shark fin imports) made it into law.

I feel like there should be a bot to post this under every UK petition. I'm not saying don't keep making them, but what a joke is the lack of actual engagement from the government.

I absolutely agree. Though, there's still value in having good, irrefutable data that the government didn't listen.

Think about what this petition is asking the government to do, it's frankly ludicrous, even though I agree with the sentiment and the aims.

You're asking the government to debate a potential law to outlaw foreign media ownership when the vast majority of media outlets in the UK are owned by foreign individuals or corporations (notable exceptions would include the BBC, Channel 4, GB News and a few newspapers like The Guardian and The Daily Mail among others). And what does "distribute media ownership" even mean in practical terms?

The truth is, >95% of everything ever posted as a Parliament petition is so far beyond the scope of what any parliamentary debate is even capable of quantifying, let alone writing into law.

petition.parliament.uk solely exists to try and stop protests. The government is happy to let us shout into the void.
