Linux gaming so good, games often run better (even on Proton)

I very rarely get issues gaming on Linux and have noticed better performance across the board.

Meanwhile, Windows friends on Discord are often holding up gaming night because of driver issues, crashes, device detection/selection issues, troubleshooting settings to see what's causing inexplicable FPS drops...

On the very rare times this happens on Linux, you just go to ProtonDB and someone's usually posted the fix; usually selecting another Proton version or pasting in a launch line.

Yep, I've been using Linux for gaming for years on and off.

The funny thing is that I owned an Xbox, and, it failed to stream to windows (just got a black screen). That's actually when i spit the dummy and sold the Xbox, and switched back to linux.

I also owned a Mac Studio M2, which cost MORE than a gaming PC, (M2 didn't even have hardware raytracing). And, my steam library was fairly empty (because, no proton).

No OS is perfect, but, Steam clearly wouldn't be releasing a Linux based VR headset and "console", if they weren't confident.

In my own experience on Rog Ally with No mans sky, No mans sky was mostly unplayable in Windows, but ran perfectly in Linux.

And MacOS? It has a far smaller market share, most games don't play (no integrated proton, so your steam library will be fairly limited), and Apple still barely even supports VR (if you're into that).

The Meta Quest units actually run Linux internally. Steam Frame will also be linux based too.

... From June 2025??

auzy1@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 2d

Yep, its an old article, and it has been getting even better since then.

Madthumbs/linuxsucks is STILL claiming that linux gaming sucks..

I posted this just in case there were people who haven't tried Linux for gaming, because they're concerned games don't work, or proton is bad/slow.

On very specific hardware (clickbait headline)

auzy1@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d (6 replies)

And on only specific hardware is Windows faster in a lot of cases. For Mac OS, it gets destroyed in general

GeForce now just officially exited beta for Linux too.. (and, dgx spark is Linux too)

Compare at recommended specs. Linux takes specific and pretty consistent performance hits for DX11; 0-5%, and DX12; 5-15% when the hardware isn't tailored.

That's a lot of ifs

Yes, typically unprofessional benchmarks are used by LiGNUts because a professional doesn't tailor the benchmark to the OS. It's like how in the browsers sub on Reddit, Brave would use a low karma account to stage a poll where Brave couldn't lose on a weekly basis. This kind of propaganda is loved by LiGNUts and rewarded with Karma or upvotes.

This kind of crap also happened when Elden Ring came out. You could jump through hoops to apply a patch to make run better than Windows for about a month. The official patch came out and changed things, but LiGNUts continue to inform people that it performed better on Linux.

I was an Arch user, with DWM and 12 manually installed patches with Elden Ring at the time. Even I didn't bother jumping through those ridiculous hoops.

You're misleading people with this propaganda and it's only going to backfire into more and more people hating Linux. People I met IRL used to not even know what Linux was, now I hear things like 'yeah, I've heard of it; not a fan' type comments. -If that's what you want, keep it up.

Elden ring runs poorly on everything.. It's badly coded.

Steam machine literally runs Linux. So, the world's biggest gaming store trusts it. The world's biggest mobile system. The world's biggest VR manufacturer. Etc

You mentioned dx12, but most game engines used offer multiple backends specifically because engines like vulkan is more portable and works on more platforms

You simply throw things into AI to get the responses you want. Which is also why your posts say weird things like "Linux doesn't work well without ECC" or "our APIs don't change". Or even that weird post that suggests that metal in macOS killed Linux gaming (few devs are limiting their major games to just macOS)

Your idea of professional is using Gemini or Claude.

In my case, no man's sky was literally unplayable on Windows on rog Ally, and because steam uses their own compositor in Linux, it resolved all the issues with games not closing properly, etc which armory crate can't fix.

Don't really care to read coping. Paying a premium for a graphics card to run 15% sub par and trying to justify it by making sacrifices is pretty pathetic.

auzy1@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d

Weird how no professional benchmarks are attached. Almost like you grabbed that statement from Gemini.

I guess you don't cope as well when you can't ban people from commenting.

Guessing AI doesn't have any real response to Nvidia choosing Linux, or why Microsoft just ramped up Windows OEM costs
