Make the live streams cheap and easily accessible, no geo blocking or other gate-keeping stupidities , and the problem will resolve itself. Most people are fine to subscribe if it's a reasonable price and easy to get to.

Some ppl are always gonna pirate, by choice, but they're the minority.

Make the live streams cheap and easily accessible

non-starter for corporations.

WhatAmLemmy@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 3d (2 replies)

Yep. This is why I will never pay them anything, ever. Their business model is incompatible with value or sustainability. They will only ever achieve quality for a brief moment in time, to acquire funding and customers, then they will rape you to death and tell you they had no choice.

The radically communist belief that checks notes sports shouldn't be for profit

may want to check out retrovibed and in particular this post. full disclosure: I'm trying to bootstrap it as a nonprofit for this exact reason, its getting ready for public alpha release.

Cheap? Easy? Are we running a corporation or what?😂

You need 3 different subscriptions and a VPN for Amazon Prime to watch all Champions league und regular Season football (soccer) games where I live. It costs about 120EUR ~ 140 USD/month to follow my team.

It's ridiculous and I have no qualms about paying for IPTV to watch my team. Nobody, from the players to the owners to the broadcast rights holders need my money more than I do.

For a period of time Viaplay showed all Premier League and Champions League games for a reasonable price (I think it was around 30€ per month, but it was before corona) in my country, it was so good that people from other countries signed up to follow their team during the season. It was great, but since then they have doubled their price, lost Champions League, some of the Premier League games and the quality of the commentators and studio has decreased.

I actually used to watch Champions League on CBS / Paramount for a while with a US VPN when it was only 4,99 per month and before Trump took over the management. Ever since Trump is back in power I refuse to pay a cent for US services.

I agree. I paid for years for music and video streaming, but all I see is widespread enshitification, rising prices and the reintroduction of ads, despite paying. On top of that everything I do is used for profiling and surveillance. It is sickening. I'll happily pay for the service that gives me a good product and does not track me.

Lastly, you give them money and you still don't own anything. I cancelled my Kindle subscription after all the stories of them pulling books out of people's private libraries after they paid for them.

Some of the most successful piracy rings are paid services. This is particularly true of live sports - I've tried watching them for free and it's such a whack a mole game. My favourite memory was the time I tried watching 24 hours Le Mans one year, they managed to kill all the free streams for the last 2 hours of the race.

If the laws also implement painful fines for incorrect blocking or overblocking bring it on, and let's see how that works out for those ghouls.

Meanwhile EU drags its feet on just about everything else.
They can't even claim Think of the Childrenâ„¢ with this one as they do with ChatControl...

WAIT. There are still some Linux ISOs that I haven't had the time or space to download yet!!! Please wait until storage prices go down and then end the internet? 🥲

Why wasn't I born in like... The 60's or something. Acid, counterculture, no phones, no internet to mourn the death of...

Being born in the 60s is only useful if you're a white male

So true. 😓
