Interesting. It seems he built a skeleton for the bottom of the boat with some square tubing. It looks like that skeleton acts as a sled while he uses a winch on the front bumper to pull the boat into the bed.

Pretty cool way to haul a boat without negotiating a trailer. But also very unaerodynamic, I wonder what the gas mileage is like compared to using a trailer.

Also, street legal vehicles in the US have height restrictions that also apply to anything you're towing/hauling. This looks like it may be exceeding that limit.

It looks shorter than most 5th wheel/gooseneck travel trailer heights, and honestly might not be that hard on efficiency because the hull shape might help it cut through the air. A truck like that will probably end up getting the same economy more or less full versus empty anyways

Fuel economy on that thing is... 7, tops.

He has a trailer ball hitch and it actually looks used. Maybe he had to haul the boat and a trailer for something else at the same time?

Needs a propeller on the trailer hitch.

Is this how you make more boats or more trucks?

Hon, what does that sign mean? It says “overpass”.

Have you ever heard of the 11 foot 8 (now 11 foot 8 plus 8)?

deegeese@sopuli.xyz · 3 pts · 5d

It is known.

The center of gravity is so high that this should immediately be pulled over on the grounds of it being a danger to the public. The rollover risk here is insane.

Ferrous@lemmy.ml · 4 pts · 5d

Meh. Probably not much more than a slide in camper.

Let me introduce you to semis and their trailers...

AstralPath@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 5d

Semi trailers are loaded on their floors and cargo is not stacked unless it needs to be. The load on this truck is higher than the load anywhere on the floor of a typical semi trailer. Semis are also much heavier and slower than a pickup. Their trailers are also designed to avoid body roll to stabilize the load. They are inherently more stable than a pickup truck.

The load in this truck will be subject to much more lateral G and body roll than any properly loaded and secured semi trailer.

All it will take to turn this entire vehicle into an uncontrolled projectile on the highway via a rollover is an over aggressive evasive action to avoid something like a pothole or debris on the road. This is terribly unsafe. Its not even a reasonable way to transport the load since trailers exist for this exact purpose. It puts everyone on the road including the driver of this truck at a higher risk for injury.

Amazingly the suspension is still around stock and not lifted 3 feet.
