My current cat does not help with bugs. One time a giant centipede looking thing came into the bedroom, on the ceiling. He looked at it, got up, and left the room.
I did this once when I was a kid. Saw a bug, grabbed my hunter cat and hoisted him up, expecting him to swat at it. Oh he smashed it, and then brought it to his mouth and started chomping. I had no idea to expect this and was so grossed out that I dropped him (sorry kitty — he was totally fine, if a little disgruntled).
Now my cats are pampered princesses with no huntress instinct whatsoever so I’ve resorted to a fly swatter.
I have one hunter and one spoiled asshole. The spoiled asshole would just toy with insects. He would see a spider and just put his paw on it and watch it try to run. And then when he's bored of it he will just leave it to die.
I have two furry air defense missiles, ever time something flying enters my apartment I just wish it good luck. Bugs, flies, mosquitos, they all die and get munched within minutes. I just have to keep an eye out for wasps and bees because I don't want to take that trip to the vet.
It's a purring iron dome.

It's amazing how cats will know their mission despite being disturbed and held in the most unnatural way possible.
