I once saw someone at my apartment complex try to use a cardboard box as a cat carrier. The cat clawed him good and then busted out to take off running. The poor man's wife was not amused.
When I adopted my cat, the shelter actually used a cardboard carrier. This was several years ago, so I can’t remember if it was double corrugated, but maybe they just used regular carriers if the cats were more upset about carriers.

Just leave the carrier out full time. Throw a blanket in it and problem solved.
