Carney has ended the negotiations and recalled the team back to Ottawa after the US tried to insert unreasonable demands at the last minute. Also dollar for dollar retaliatory tariffs have been enacted. Fuck you orange shit stain.

I've recently realized one thing: I now use Interac to pay instead of my credit card. Using the credit card is like paying a tax that sends money straight to the US. I hope more people do so.

I hope they bring back the electronic services tax.

What annoys me is the lack of appetite amonst CAD banks/POS companies in creating their own credit card to break free from Mastercard/VISA. I'm not sure how it's going in Europe, I thought WERO was going to do something.

DaddleDew@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 1d

It blows my mind that the use of US credit cards continues. Interac charges somewhere around 0.1-0.2% transaction fee. Meanwhile American credit cards charge 2-3%. They give you 1% as "rewards" to give you the impression that you're not being robbed and they pocket the rest.

Knowing that, I now fully respect vendors who charge a credit card fee to their customers instead of forcing everyone to pay for it through blanket higher prices.

My biggest gripe from living in CO was the fact I had to use debit to buy cannabis because Visa and Mastercard wouldn’t handle dispensary business south of the border. Anyways, use interac, save the 3% fee, and take solace that no one is harvesting your info (except your big 5 bank).

So, there's this other payment system I've heard about. No fees, no purchase tracking, and accepted almost everywhere.

Maybe youve heard of it? It's called "cash"...

Good point...

OldCrow@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 1d (2 replies)

What? Someone please educate me. I “always” use MC to pound points. I always pay CC off every month. How is this sending money to U.S.??

Corvid_Moon@lemmy.ca · 10 pts · 1d (1 reply)

MasterCard & Visa charge a merchant fee to the seller, meaning a percentage of each transaction made using these cards goes to the American credit companies directly, thereby contributing to the US economy.

DaddleDew@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 1d

Exactly. Essentially, about 1% of every dollar spent in Canada using an American credit card goes straight to the US like a tax. People should spread awareness about this.

let's see the USA restock all the wasted military equipment without rare earth material, aluminum or lumber

who would have thought a rapist, child molester, convicted fraudster could be a good president? Muricans apparently… enjoy the hell you voted for

The whole world should collectively refuse to the business with the Untied States until they have a serious person in charge

corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca · 8 pts · 1d (3 replies)

If they can't buy it, they'll invade for it. See: Venezuela, and probably others.

At least they're so low on rockets that they'll have to use people and tanks. If only we had a plant for drone manufacturing to stockpile .... Nevermind.

Smaile@lemmy.ca · 10 pts · 1d

They. can't. do. that. They physicly don't have the capability of pulling that off. Like you said their low on artilery and the army and citizenry already hate the admin. America is already under pressure trying to fight Iran, it can't start a bunch of wars for resorces it doesn't have. it's military isn't built for it anymore and a lot of the capable military minds have left or were kicked out.

Putin won't get ukraine but at least he gets to watch his life long rival, America, eat absolute shit before he crokes.

FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca · 8 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Can't invade everywhere all at once

BurgerBaron@quokk.au · 8 pts · 1d

These aren't rational people and they're still working on destabilizing Alberta.

Malyca@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Exactly, sanctions like any other hostile country

FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca · 10 pts · 1d

I fear the world isn't taking the American threat seriously enough and that will be our downfall. It's like the world doesn't look at the Untied States the way it would any other emerging dictatorship. I fear they will annex other countries and the world will act like it's all perfectly normal. I get very angry when people around me talk about the Untied States like everything is normal and when people I know still willingly go there. Are they just that fucking oblivious? The media in Canada and around the world need to treat the Untied States like a hostile threat that is dangerous to travel to

huppakee@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 1d

I hope the people who voted for him will not enjoy the hell they caused though. For the people who did not vote at all I hope they experience enough hell to do better next time. For the people who did not vote for Trump, I hope the hell doesn't hurt them too much because they are our only hope to rid us of this mess.

Looks like carney is ok with braking off from us trade now. Good, finally done with this nonsense.

You won't accept my deal, so I'm going to tax my own citizens!

Cut off the nose to spite the face is the American way, irregardless of alignment.

seerdomin1983@lemmy.ca · 0 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Not surprised, just disappointed. Both our economies would benefit. I think trump profits from them and so all this economic sabotage benefits him somehow.

If the current situation lasts for decades. How long until there’s economic refugees hopping the border. Would the liberals just open the doors and Canada becomes more of a swamp?

OldCrow@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 1d

Wow. If you were a character in a Winnie-the-Pooh book, you’d be Eeyore!
