Almost did this yesterday on the hour long drive to tubing. My roommate was in the back seat with me reading, and a few times I almost tried including them into the conversation before reminding myself that they were off in book world.
I am quite sure humans started eating fish as a way to get people off their back and let them sit in peace without being disturbed for not appearing busy.

Someone who worked with both Presidents talked about the differences between Lyndon Johnson and John Kennedy.
If Kennedy saw someone reading a book he would assume the man was working hard.
If LBJ saw a man reading, he'd assume they were goofing off.
