My parents - who merely the screen over my shoulder when I was playing it at their house - I can understand. But my friends who are as plugged into the Internet as me, if not more, they have no excuse
I've never had to explain it but if I did I would just say imagine a board game where you roll a dice, move that many spaces, and maybe get a random card. Just replace the dice with a deck of cards, where getting better cards is like rolling a higher number on the dice.

Have y'all tried Black Jacket?
It's kind of like Balatro with Blackjack, but it's also an allegory for gambling addictions and the devastation it causes to others.
