TIL about Vine-Glo

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vine-Glo

Vine-Glo was a grape concentrate brick product sold in the United States during Prohibition by Fruit Industries Ltd, a front for the California Vineyardist Association (CVA), from 1929.

The product was advertised with tips for preventing alcoholic fermentation, with one salesperson giving customers a very specific warning: "Do not place the liquid in this jug and put it away in the cupboard for twenty-one days, because then it would turn into wine."

Here in Sweden there used to be ads in the newspaper with mailorder juice- or pressure cooker and warnings of how to not accidentally turn it into a distillery and make booze.

I got curious one day looking at how distilleries with "Since 18xx" survived. They pivoted. Alcohol was fine as a drug and prescription, and also wines were still sold as sacremental for churches. Also, church attendance rose noticeably during Prohibition. Wanna get drunk ye alcoholics? Come to Mass!
