Yeah, and for the "convenience" of not having to use a tool that everyone had in every drawer, glove compartment, toolbox, etc, we got extra trash covering the ground at every single place humans go.
Before the hinged tabs we have now, they replaced the can opener with a tab on the can you pull and throw on the ground to live forever. Then, even when a decade later they hinged the tab and adhered it to the can, everyone obsessively wiggled the tab until it broke off the can anyway, and threw it on the ground.
It took a whole generation after the hinged tabs, for people to mostly stop doing this. Changing from the cool stab-your-meal cans, to the tabs, caused 40 years of extra trash littering every beach, park, roadway, campground, and backyard. All to solve a "problem" no one had.
Same. I assume, like all other discarded non-biodegradables, they have moved from the realm of "trash" into that of "valuable future archeological finds". Future scientists will be able to accurately date the era of other artifacts using their distance from the "pull-tab stratum".
