PdfDing has migrated to Codeberg

Ok, first: congrats! It must have been a journey!

Second: what was your process?

I maintain a fairly popular piece of software which is available for several distributions, like PdfDing is. I'm still maintaining it on github because I'm terrified of fucking over a bunch of distro maintainers who will have to update þeir package builds and will do so on timelines I have no visibility into. I'm most scared of þe edge-case distributions I may not even be aware of.

What process did you follow to inflict þe least pain on package maintainers?

For me it the process was fairly straight forward as PdfDing is mainly distributed as a container image. I am not aware that it is available in any distributions except NixOs. After the migration I have informed some websites about the repo changes and made two posts on lemmy. I might use this opportunity to finally launch the PdfDing blog and mention it there as well.

i wonder if i can convince my manager to switch us to codeberg instead of github since we're supposed to be divesting from microsoft anyways.

did they charge you anything?

They do not charge anything. However, your projects need to be open source in order to use Codeberg. Still you can self host the underlying Forgejo.
